Fuel gauge *SOLVED*

So today I got my MR cluster tacho working as I had taken it to an instrument specialist to make it work set me back around 360 :O

Now I got them to check my fuel gauge also as the last time I filled to the top I only managed to get 260 when hitting empty.. Now with the mirage having a 50L tank and mine being a 1.5 it should get 450 hopefully? Now I don't drive like a madman.. At the moment so it is clearly wrong haha.

My question is; could the MR cluster not be reading the fuel sender correctly? And if so how do I fix this? Can't afford a hefty fee again :(

Re: Fuel gage

$360 man thats just sick, i litterally just threw up in my mouth
is the guage just above the fill line when full? because the needle may have been removed at sometime and not put back on properly ,and is it right on empty when your at 250k? because they sit there for aagggeesss just above empty, mine will sit just above empty for about 100kms before it moves again.
simpliest way is to fill up check kms to your empty and then fill back up then see ltrs used then do the maths and try again.
if its total wacked out it could be your fuel sender which is an easy fix.give us some more details of what your guage is actually doing.
i can tell you how to do the sender your self its an easy diy,

Fuel gage

Coulda just bought another 5 clusters for that money...
If the fuel gauge isn't working properly as it should, take it back and tell them to fix it properly cuz you sure paid enough. Even tho it's probably not a problem with the cluster, or the needle might be on a bit too low which is an easy fix.

Re: Fuel gage

$360, holy *poo*. My fuel gauge stopped reading correctly twice in my first lancer. Sender both times. It had died again when I sold it.

Re: Fuel gage

the problem was not the cluster, but my signal was not strong enough etc. I wanted a rev counted and because I don't know how to wire anything up.. that's what I had to pay. With the money I could have saved buying 5 new cluster, all 5 rev counters would not have worked

Now how do I know if my needle is to low? even when my car is off the fuel gage needle stays up, it is the only one that does? :S

Also would I have to get a fuel sender from a MR lancer if it needed changed or do they all work on the same resisitance?

Re: Fuel gage

nope they all stay where they last got a signal to be at , and no you dont need an MR one there all the same anyways, just go to the wreckers and pull a not bad looking one from a wreck, you find it under the back seat there is like a 4 or 5 inch hole with a metal cap on it right in the middle, un clip the connector and three nuts and pull it out slowly.
Reverse the process on your car , make sure you disco the battery and leave you hatch and doors open for safety reasons as you will have some fumes in your car whilst you do it.
Plug it back in and reconnect your battery and ya done. Its like a 5 minute job literrally
Id be trying this fix first its the easiest and cheapest to do if they want more then a tenna for the part tell them to FO
Next time you cant do a job your self maybe let the community know there are plenty of ppl to help you out with advise or come and help you considering there are heaps of ppl on here in uni/school that would gladly earn a few bucks I can pretty much guarntee that would have done it for less then half that cost.

Re: Fuel gage

Thanks mmc77, Ill have a go. not much of a DIY but after 360 leaving my pocket I better start. plus ill pay more attention to where the needle sits when on full and empty!

Thanks for the tip, didnt think it would have been over 160 honestly for the job but once it was in the shop and done little I could do.

Ill try get to it in a few weeks and let you know how I go

Re: Fuel gage

No worries, oh well what done is done leason learnt abiet an expensive one. Maybe fill up and when you get to 350ks fill again thats would be a safe number for your 1.5 easily just to be safe til you get the sender changed, I get about 450 ks outta 40l from my 1.8 and i dont mind giving it a rev now and well .. now. lol gl.

I don't get why people quote kms per tank, its an absolutely meaningless number when looking at fuel economy. Convert it to L/100km by taking into account the amount of fuel it took to fill the tank to the top (ie give a quantative not qualitive response). For all we know your car could have woeful economy and thus a low km/tank or the economy could be fine and the gauge is faulty.

Re: Fuel gage

as far as I know yes i put one from a 97 1.8 coupe into my old 2000 1.5 mirage , if you wanted to be double sure check what yours looks like more so the connector/ number of wires / colour etc which you can do buy having a look under the seat as mentioned, its prob over kill iam 99% sure there all the same.
Just look for the best looking one there ie no white corosion nice gasket etc and when your removing it go slow and angle it out so you dont bend the arm

Re: Fuel gage

cheers mate, consider moving to VIC so when I stuff *poo* up I got a helpful hand hahah

Re: Fuel gage

Hi guys, just wondering but do your fuel gauge needles drop when you turn off ur car? Mine seems to stay all the time. I thought it was normal cz it came like that when I bought it.

Re: Fuel gage

so on the last line before empty and at 299km

something can't be right.

will be putting a 5L jerry can in the back and drive til it dies..

Re: Fuel gage

Is that the ks from full tank? Ill put a bet on 450 with 20ks either side :)
Did you change your fuel sender yet?

Fuel gage

My bet is the needle is on too low. I'm about to fill up, I'll take a picture where it's supposed to be on full and you can compare to yours when you fill up.

Re: Fuel gage

There you go, that's 2k's on after a full fill up. See if yours it at that level when you fill up.
