Extractors and Catback

Hello guys.
I was thinking of getting a new set of 4-2-1 mild-steel extractors(probably Hens coz ppl on the auslancer site have had good experiences with 'em), high flow cat and a catback exhaust. I researched the auslancer site and based my info on that (e.g getting mild steel instead of stainless steel extractors, getting 4-2-1 etc).
Mainly I am in for performance gains and good sound. I currently have a Drift pod filter and a cannon at the back. My car is 2000 CE lancer 4 door sedan (4g93).
Price range is probably max $1.5k.

I want to know what you guys think and what your professional opinions are because I don't know that much or have experience with cars. Also typical price ranges for the mods would be good to get a good deal so I don't get ripped off. Also any good or bad brands you guys might know etc. In regards to the Hens extractors, how would I go about ordering and getting them fit? I am not too keen on online ordering so maybe I was thinking exhaust shop could order them in for me and then fit it??. Lastly I am near the Westmead area so any one in particular I should get it done from? Hills Motorsports in Castle Hill seem good.

Any information would be helpful.
Thanks

Hens products = great
order by emailing hens (then wait a while for reply) get in the mail, take to zorst shop/fabricator/workshop
get them to install them, then give you a "mandrel bent" 2inch or 2.25inch exhaust from the cat back with your choice of muffler (no fat tin plz)

Although I cannot quote you a brand, I spent a total of $1500 on mine. I have a 4-2-1 stainless header, high-flow 200cpi cat, mild steel mid-pipe and twin stainless final muffler.

Personally, I fitted the final exhaust and mid-pipe, but left the final fitment of the headers to the professionals, as mine is in the rear of the engine and best done on a hoist.

I have had good power gains (6kw) with my CAI and panel K&N filter. It's not a lot, agreed, but the car does not suffer as much low down, as it once did.. The car revs freer and also sounds a lot better. I technically did not need a twin-rear, but I wanted that look as most mid-sized sports oriented sedans have them (Mazda 6, Camry Sportivo etc).

Good luck with yours..

Hey Ray, Nice plans on the exhaust. You can do alot with $1.5K I haven't done much myself so I wouldn't be the best person to advise you, but I did get Hens extractors and I like them a fair bit.

As for getting the extractors from Hens, you can PM him on here as he is now a Sponsor! Or goto his webpage and contact him via mobile/email etc. He is located in Canley Vale, so not too far of a trek for you! I highly doubt any exhaust shop would be able to order Hens extractors.

Assuming you dont want to go turbo, the best size would be 2inch or 2.25inch. As you already have intake mods (pod filter, hopefully a CAI not just hanging in the engine bay) and sound semi keen for performance, Id say 2.25inch would be a good size for you.

I know Citta on here got his whole setup (3in I believe) done for about $1000 at fast fit mufflers in Leichhardt and they have pretty good rep from what I hear.

Anyways, Ill leave the rest upto the other boys who have more experience with this.

Mine is 2.5", forgot to mention, but I have 2.0ltr..

2.25" would be great for yours... as suggested above.

Since i just done this recently, i can tell you although i dont have hens performance extractors id recommend them since henry sells good *poo*.
if you can try fit them on yourself if you wanna save cash otherwise get henry to fit them on, then since you got extractors, get a 2.25 inch mandrel bent exhaust from cat back (mild steel), along with a hi flow cat.
in terms of mufflers, magnaflow supposedly have great sounds but are expensive, lukey mufflers are cheaper and sound good to from what vie been told. But i can tell you from experiencce as i have one, that berklee mufflers have a great sound, make sure to get a large muffler to minimise the "droning" sound on idle or "barking" sound when thrashing it. I got my berklee muffler with a 2.5inch stainless still tip so it looks subtle and doesnt attract too much attention, its decently quite when driving normal, then roars when giving it some.

Btw since your at westmead, id recommend westmead performance exhaust, thats where i got my cat and cat back done, hakkan the owner does good welding which you see when inspecting the finished work, hes a bit more expensive the liverpool exhaust but cheaper than castle hill exhaust. The hi flow cat with the cat back exhaust and muffler cost me $720 all up, this doesnt include the cost of my extractors.

Thanks for the information.

Went to Midas and they quoted:

Extractors $626 (Lukey and I think Redback?)

Cat High Flow $440

Catback $280

That looks like too much!

I might call the contact at Hens this friday and see what happens.

I still have some questions:

Firstly I am not sure about the legal status but still if the cops say it is too loud or whateva then what happens? Do they make you take those mods off? (Gonna suck wasting money getting them and then getting them off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So if u get defected can u like take em off and then put them back on again later on or something. My friend got defected for a CAI and that is exactly what he did)

Secondly with the catback-> so the guys will install the extractors, high flow cat and catback exhaust but what about the cannon at the back? I think a guy I talked to said that they replace all the piping between extractors and exhaust and then keep ur own cannon at the back.

Also what is difference between extractor back exhaust? same as catback? are they worth it?

Lastly I read one of the threads on auslancer about a guy doing his exhaust and u guys suggested a hotdog resonator or something like that. what is that?

I would appreciate someone who has a similar setup to offer their opinion.

I wanna get it all done at once coz this should save money on labour doing them separately. (I am planning on everything getting professionally fitted coz i am not experienced in this)

Lastly it would be cool if people put their exhaust sound vids on youtube (there are tons of similar vids). this way everyone can get an idea about the sound and also other youtubers can check em out as well. ;)

Thx 4 da info

sorry cant help you out with anything at all, but i just wanted to say that last point i reckon is a cool idea! i love watching vids of other lancers :p

1st-440 for a hi flow cat is simply a rip off
2nd- hot dog resonator is use in conjuction with ur cat back piping to do reduce noise, thats why its suggested, so ur exhaust attracts less attention since its quieter
3rd-if you get defected then yes you have to modify your modification by either putting stok back on or putting a larger muffler or resonator to reduce the noise
4th-an extractor back exhaust is the replace of the entire ehaust system from the extractors (engine) through to the very tip at the back, so its all the piping and cat included

finnally, keeping your cannon would reduce the price of putting a catback, but cannons in general are loud and attract too much attnention your better off putting on a muffler with a 2.25-2.75 inch tip which would give deep sound and much better than a cannon in my opinion

trust me go to westmead performance exhaust, they do a good job and decent prices, tell them what you want, i paid $720 for everything done (except extractors) youd pay less if u intend on keeping ur canon which i recommend you dont, add extractors plus fitment onto the total cost and id say ur looking around 1200-1300 for everything

Good info. Dont wanna get ripped off by midas! I am gonna call the westmead guy and the hens contact.

also topgunjames: what sort of extractors u got? they good?
Secondly can hakkan source the hens extractors? coz if not then i gotta go to henry to get the extractors. then i guess i could bring em to hakkan?
thirdly: how long does it take? day job?

Thanks man

zorst takes a few hours, so have a day spare for it
get extractors straight from hens, take them to hakkan and they will fit them

midas is a rip off. dont bother going there.

i got my headers off ebay for only like $130, then had a place in leichardt fit them, and make up the rest of the exhaust system in 2.25" piping and a 2.5" hi flow cat. the muffler ive had for years, it cost me $100 from llt years ago.

headers: $130
muffler: $100
fitting and piping: $680 ($300 of that being the hi flow cat, $80 being modification of the headers for more clearance coz my cars so low lol) installation and fabrication took them about 4 hours.

this is where i went
http://www.fastechmufflers.com.au/

Yep as the above guys said, get hakkan to do your exhaust at westmead, if you want extractors from hens, then contact henry, buy them and take them to hakkan and get him to fit them and the rest of your exhaust system, it will take roughly 4 hours i reckon, mine took about 3 hours for everything except extractors.
I have 4-2-1 stainless steel extractors from "n-power" which cost me $150 lol, they give performance gains and look awesome, but their downfall is the tingy or wheezing sound when u hit 2500rpm up until 3300rpm or so, so id recommend getting mild steel extractors from hens, theyd give the same gains, wont look as good, but wont give any tingy sounds that are associated with stainless steel.

My friend called Henry and talked to him. Henry said that he can get the parts and fit them as well in his house(i.e hens extractors, catback exhaust and high flow cat). Any1 else bought and fitted parts from him? I thot he had a shop? Would he have the available equipment at his house??????????????????????????

So in the end guys:
4-2-1 mild-steel extractors(Hens coz ppl on the auslancer site have had good experiences with 'em), high flow cat (any) and a catback exhaust (any)

With the high flow cat and catback exhaust: should i get any or is there anything in particular i should know about them or go for: e.g mild steel, stainless steel etc. Or leave it up to the mechanic??????????????

Thx

Didn't we explain all this already!?

Get mild, if you can't afford stainless... The only difference IS stainless will not rust and look crappola after a few months... You can do a mild steel mid-pipe, unless you want a show-quality undercarriage... there is little weight savings unless you do titanium and that is well above most of us here...

So, I like pretty bits, I have the stainless extractors and final twin muffler... those can be seen. The unseen, is the mild steel mid-pipe and high-flow catalytic.

Get 4-2-1, great for daily drivers. 4-1 is great for high-rev/race track application.

With the advice I provided, you can be well under your $1.5k budget, and still having stainless front and back.

Your choice. Mine does not drone, nor is it 'tinny' (which is one of the most common debunked myths about using stainless = stainless comes in various thicknesses)

I will video mine shortly.
