Evo 7 GTA Help

Hey all,

New to the forum and looking at buying an Evo 7 GTA - I know I know why not a manual, real reason is because it is a second family car so need an auto so that everyone can drive it.

Im coming from a VE HSV and E46 M3 before that so had a few performance cars, but this would be my first jap turbo car.

I have found so far that the main issues for these cars is the gearbox might fail and the AYC can break as well. Is there anything else I should look for or be concerned about with these cars?

Any info outside of this would be much appreciated as I would like to know as much as I can before I open the wallet on one of these

Thanks for any help!!

Hey mate where are you located? My friends dad is selling his Evo 7 GT-A and you might be interested, it's one of the few that haven't been flogged.

Hi, I spoke to my mechanic about one last week. He told me the gearbox was the main issue as you're already aware.
He listed a bunch of cons which were all the cosmetic differences between GTA & GSR. Most previous owners have fitted recaros and the vented bonnets anyway. He also said the fuel economy is worse than a GSR.

Ayc will only really break if you are harsh on it.
My E6 has done 5-6 track days in my possession with Ayc with no signs of letting go.

@ bjI90 - I have a EVO 7 gearbox in my EVO 6 and a button clutch and i havnt felt any probs with the gear box so what exactly is the problem with them?

@ miss_hendo - Can i ask you the same question as you asked your mech. And good to see your still active.

In regards to ayc failures there is a couple of different ways the ayc rear diff itself can fail

CRACKED CASING
By far the most common i have seen and this is always due to launching the rear mounts on the case crack from torsional load when launching and mostly only causes a oil leak but requires full diff replacement or be rebuilt with a new rear case
Note RS diffs are mounted in a different way to try avoid this.

AYC AND RING AND PINION OIL MIXING.
Happens when a internal oil seal is breached

AYC CLUTCH/ CLUTCH BASKET FALIURE
Can happen from either not changing the oil at regular intervals OR very high load/abusive aplications.

There are other ways they can fail but these are the most common I have seen.
In general they are a good unit and quite strong when serviced correctly and used in there intended enviroment.

FAR MORE COMMON IS AYC PUMP FAILURE. And thats another story altogether.

@ Tweetbix - im not currently a member of that site so access denied lol. EVO 7's came with a manual gearbox is that a better dogbox or does it sufffer the same *poo*.

@ ce9aevo2 -
Yeah as the guy i bought mine off had it in the garage and drove it rarely and now im giving it what they're made for im finding little hiccups, probably due to gunk in lines or something but im getting AYC check light coming on here and there but oil res. is good and oils clean so it maybe the fact that he took the clock spring out, what do you think?

Evo 7's (RS and GSR models) came with the standard 5 speed that previous models did.
The evo 7 GT-A was considered a gentlemen's car, and as a result, came equipped with a less sporty interior and an auto.
I'm also fairly sure it came with a smaller turbo or maybe just a different tune.

@ Tweetbix - im tryn to ascertain whether my box will stand up to the button clutch and power (315 hp - 234kwtw) that my car has seeings how i intend to go alot further with the power side of things.

@ Tweetbix - nah man my bad i was talking about that but asked ur advice about my EVO 7 box whether it would be good enough to handle as we were talking about their failures etc.

In regards to Ayc light coming on and off. The Ayc system is quite sophisticated and could be one of many different problems that can arise in the Ayc control system, most of which are related to the pump, solenoids or accumulator.
The only real way to diagnose it properly would be to catch the car with the light on and use a scan tool or evoscan and cable to pull the code and go from there.

Good advice hendo.

OP sounds like you've already bought the gta. Just be gentle with the gearbox, cause they're very fragile from factory.
The direct planetries, and wavespring are the main things upgraded by Mitsubishi.
I just recently got mine overhauled after 2 months of owning it, which wasn't cheap. So just a heads up ;)

Oh and fuel economy is quite bad, so a tune will definitely help with this
