Engine pinging

Hey, and here I was being serious and trying to help... pfft!

May as well have said, "sounds like you need to replace your wipers'.....

Lol with all the smartasses / disrespectful n00bies (not directed at electronix) around here right now I'm finding it really hard to be serious...

In all seriousness;

If it can be timed, time it.
If it could be overheating, trace the problem.
If you could have carbon deposits, check plugs, change if necessary and run a few tanks with fuel cleaner through....
Use all current fuel and buy elsewhere for next tank.
If it is a carby model (unsure), check for lean running.

That should cover most issues...

Alright well I was doing the same section of road today and it came back but much worse this time...

What could have made it become so much worse in such a short amount of time????

Im pretty worried the car I just bought is screwed :? :(

EDIT: also I just checked the oil and its just over half full so i shouldnt be having problems to do with the oil.

Oil level wouldn't make it ping... Do you think it might be the ground surface or an exhaust leak? are you driving close to a wall or in a tunnel?

nope i was in the middle lane of an open freeway so I dont think its exhaust. I just had my catback done at a specialist exhaust place so there shouldnt be any problems.

Can the oil level really cause such big problems?

It hasnt been that many k's since you said it had a service by rights the fluid should be full anyway.

I'd suggest to fill and who knows it may rectify the noise you've heard. Porbably wont take much to top up so do a bit at a time .clean dipstick and check measurement.

.

I guess but it only happens under significant load when going uphill. I have revved the car in neutral and it doesnt happen. It also seemed to get worse when I put the car into fifth gear today so Im not sure what that means.

I could film it but I doubt it would come out well on film. Id need some sorta hollywood setup with a boom mike hanging out the window or something.

Can you tell us if you followed any of the advice, apart from the oil (which it should not be).

Does your car have a dizzy that can be timed? Is it an injected or carby model (sorry everyone, I don't know what that model lancer has)? More detail...

i havent had time to do anything. uni has been crazy and I havent driven in quite a while.

I also have pretty limited mech skills so I would need to look up everything you guys wanted me to do. Im quite certain its injected.

Simple... take it to a mechanic then... No point trying to do what we suggest (especially with limited skills and no timing light!!!)

Yeah well thanks for the advice anyway.

I didnt wanna be an ass or anything of the sort. I know how to do some stuff around the car I could easily change the oil/oil filter or replace the spark plugs but timing an engine is a bit more than my previous experience has prepped me for.

I know with some problems simply giving a detailed description is enough so I was hoping someone would be able to say "stuffed spark plugs - replace" or "carbon bulidup - need additive". I can appreciate that its hard to assertain exactly what the problem may be without having a good look and I thank everyone who helped out in giving tips.

Can anyone give me a price approximate for a mech? If its some ridiculous amount I might first exhaust all other options before settling on a mech.

$1,000,000

Put bp ultimate in your car and try it again? Have you had the dizzy off for some reason and put it back on?

$1 million doesnt sound good, Im quite a bit short...

I havent done any work under the bonnet and the only thing thats been done since I purchased it has been the exhaust. It also had the timing belt done shortly before I bought it but that was done professionally.

I have run 95 premium since purchase so not too sure about petrol really being a problem. Im considering additive but as someone who rarely drives I know I can screw the car up unless I run out the entire tank in one drive.

So essentially I should go:
1. try additive
2. change oil/filter
3. check plugs (could fouled spark plugs be causing the problem??)
4. check leads (?)
5. mech

Alrighty bit of a bump but I hope to get a second opinion.

I havent had the time to do anything around the car so I took it to a Mitsu dealership to have it looked at (figured they should know best, plus they are close). After looking over it for the morning they said its either the petrol or valve clearances. They didnt say how/what they checked and I wasnt billed for it but they said they only got pinging under very heavy load. Mech told me to run down the current tank as much as possible then refill with premium from my regular place (diff place from the "bad fuel").

Now having run down the tank pretty well with the fuel guage being two small lines from empty and the car feeling like turd when driving I finally filled up with exactly 29 litres (to full) of 95 vortex (have receipt here). Now getting to my question...

I have driven the car a bit now, and it still seems to be pinging a tiny amount uphills however its improved a bit with the new fuel. Is it likely that the pinging is purely down to bad fuel and should go away with the next refill given the fact that new fuel has helped? Sorry about the noob question but I dont know exactly how long it would take to completely clear the tank of the old stuff thats supposedly causing problems.
