Engine pinging

TBH, I just don't understand why you didn't just drain it all... meaning take out the tank and drop everything.... surely this could not be such a big job (somebody please correct me if it is...)

Also, did you even explore timing? If it is even retarded 5 degrees, it will pink badly... Get someone to chuck a timing light on your engine... such a simple precautionary measure. If your car has a computer, it will take your O2 and other sensors a while to remap for new fuel type, if it has a dizzy, then just get someone to check the timing.

If the all has failed, still, then get a mechanic to check for additional measures. They will always ask you to do the obvious stuff... like fuel, first.

P.S. some older injected cars still had an optical distributor... which can be timed/adjusted. Did you recently replace sparks? If you did, were they the same heat rating/reach etc?

I dont have a timing light and I dont have any mech friends/aquaintances I can ask tbh. Thats why I went to the mechanic hoping they knew their stuff enough/wanted to get paid to check for me.

If anyone on here is kind enough to help me out with their equipment/expertise I would shout them a carton or something but seems to me like Queensland is the only place with Lancers...

Sorry, would be all over it...like a fat-kid on a marshmallow if you lived closer... the fix is sure to be either monumentally easy or stupidly difficult, such is the way of mechanicals!!!

I would seek out assurances that it is timed correctly. Good luck.

Seriously, I don't... because I know nothing about your car... you still haven't told me if it has a distributor!!!

Most places would chuck a light on it and tell you for less than $50, I would assume (meaning nothing else done but just timing adjustment)...

I go to the same mechanic all the time, I am sure he would do that for nothing, but if I needed anything after that, he would be charging...

But hey, ring around, try Ultra Tune.. see who will give you the best price... It's time to help yourself.

Just a thought.

If it hasn't had tappets done in a while they may need adjusting, easy enough for a mechanic to do. If they told you this then get them done, then if it doesn't fix it take it back for a second go there. It's easier that way than getting several different "could be's" of of a forum, if it was really an issue you would have had it fixed by now.

it it has adjustable tappets, then its a very agricultural and old vehicle.. but then it's easy to fix too...

one of afew things it could be. one- exhaust (mine does this and has done this on past cars just louder n more consistant)
two- sump. mates gaues (cant spell it? qaws) in the sump were stuffed n made the engine tap. then his engine blew up 2 weeks later...
three- tappets, go to a mechanic n get it looked at n dont keep driving it around like my mate in his SP20 did, or you may be up for a new engine...

Honda's run adjustable tappets and so do 4g15s, 4g93, and 4g94's. Tappets are used in honda's due to the performance they can offer being able to adjust them back to spec on a service. Having them done right can make a great deal of benefit.

Josh, having a stuffed sump should not make an engine tap.. the sump is a receptacle that holds oil... the reason it was stuffed wasn't the reason the engine was stuffed, more likely the fact it could not hold oil and starvation of the aforementioned stuffed the engine...

It's nuance, but he has not said he is leaking oil, from memory...

If you have adjustable tappets, that's a part of timing.. so go and get your TIMING checked...

Could it be that the bad fuel could have amplified the 'tapping/pinging', cause that could explain the pinging getting better, but still being there... im not going to comment on what i think it is, since i'm not a certified mechanic.

I havent read much of this thread but if you still have the pinging or detonation problem still continuing I'd just let you know I had the same prob twice on my lancer. It has the 4g15 and I used to just buy the regular fuel or occasionally premium from the 7 eleven or whatever. Anyhow my mechanic did a carbon clean of the throttle body and combustion chamber with that special stuff they use lol and all was good from there on. Since then I have always stuck with premium fuel from the BP and havent had this problem since. Been bout 2yrs now.

Digging up old thread.

I managed to get rid of the pinging (knock on wood). It went away after I bought some Shell V-Power, however its still only 95 which is the same as Caltex Vortex which I usually get. Could the problem be initially caused by one crap batch of fuel?

Ive been through about one batch of vortex and one batch of v-power since it first happened and Im thinking that the fix to the problem lie in letting the ECU re-adjust to better quality petrol. Would this be about right?

not sure if it's relevant, but I've had a whole load of problems related to bad batches of LPG. I'd put my foot down and the car would basically *poo* itself and struggle. I am never going near shell again.
