CJ Lancer Exhausts/Mufflers

Hi guys, just put down a deposit on a new ES Lancer, and am looking forward to making it look and sound completely different over the next few weeks. I have a question about exhaust upgrades, now bear with me here, as I don't know much about exhausts at all. Now I want my car to be louder, right, so I googled stuff like "Lancer exhausts" and "exhaust prices" etc, etc, and many of the sites have links to mufflers and exhausts, which makes no sense to me as I thought they were the same thing (told you I don't know much about this stuff :))

Anyway, to 'make my car louder', what exactly do I need out of all the mufflers, exhausts, headers and other things I don't know the purpose of? And, anyone know how much it will set me back, and/or can it be done on a budget?

Thanks for reading guys, and I look forward to thanking you all for your posts and explanations!

full exhausts are rather expencive... but you get great sound and extra performance (which is both catback ad headers)
or
you can go for just a cat back, whch will give u the good sound, but a lesser performance gain the performance gain
or
you can go just headerswhich will give u most of the performance gain, but very little sound

make sure u get a good muffler and right diameter pipe (someone who owns a cj may be able to help u pick)
good muffler is key to having good sound with no farty bad sounds, and pipe diameter and bend type is how it will flow

Thanks for that.

Performance isn't really my no. 1 priority at the moment, just sounds and looks (keeping it ricer!), besides, I can add headers later.
Looks like I will be getting an exhaust only. I can't seem to be able to find catback prices online, I guess I have to wait until Monday.
Btw, must it be a Catback for great sound, or is the Xforce Axle-Back acceptable:

As far as my budget goes, I want to see if I can squeeze it in for under $1k (including installation), as I am trying to keep the price as low as possible, but if the cheap alternative is utter crap then I might as well not get an exhaust at all.

$450 for stainless extractors

$350-$450 for stainless twin zorst

Buy some stainless tips to your choosing and maybe a rear skirt diffuser, when budget permits....

WIN !!

$400 for the exhaust would be a dream, I just hope some of the Sydney guys are as cheap as the Queensland ones. Your car looks hot mate, just looked at your DIY thread and a lot of the mods are the sorts of things I want to do to my car. Mind if I pm you a bit in the upcoming weeks?

Btw, quick question for everyone on the forum, what colour 18" rims do you guys think would look best on a Blue CJ lancer out of these:
a) Black
b) Silver
c) White
d) Blue

Thanks everyone who's posted so far.

All those colors would look mint. It just depends on how much you wanna stand out. Black is more stealth, silvers more stock looking, whites flashy and blue is the same.

For exhausts there are a few pre-made kits out there (have a search on youtube for some clips) which you could source from the US for a decent price otherwise get a local shop to replace your rear muffler with a Lukey or Magnaflow one and stainless piping and tip. If the exhaust isn't loud enough then get them to cut out the stumpy resonator and weld a straight bit of stainless pipe in.

I would also recommend the same extractors that Tryg put up a picture of.

Thanks tryg.

I called up my local exhaust shop and they told me if I was just after a louder exhaust then they could chop something off and add something and it'll all be under $200! I'm guessing this is kind of what you mentioned Ryan, a great option. A Catback for $450 is very tempting though.

Could one of the moderators please change the name of this thread to something like "CJ Lancer project Preliminaries" as I have a question about wheels/tyres now:

Will 225/40/18 wheels/tyres fit on my ES Lancer? I ask because I found these: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/canl...ar-new-low-profile-tyres-225-40-18/1000536383
and these could halve the cost of new rims/tyres and allow a larger budget for something else.

Yeah that's what I meant, but for $200 that's probably mild steel and a yum cha muffler...

CJs are stock with stainless piping so mild steel is a downgrade (it can produce a better note but doesnt last as long as stainless), so specifically ask for a Lukey or Magnaflow stainless muffler, stainless tip (not chrome plated) and stainless piping

Those wheels will not fit your car. They are for a Subaru which have a 5x100 stud pattern, whereas Mitsubishi's are 5x114.3

Sorry forgot to answer the rims question before but Ian is spot on the money, they wont fit if they aren’t 5x114.3!

One option that looks ok is to get some VRX rims (keep an eye out on ebay) and powder coat them a really dark grey-black, looks pretty good and should set you back <$1000.

Another mod to add onto your to-do list would be BC Racing BR (gold coloured) coilover suspension at ~$1300 from our sponsor Henry who is located in Sydney out Liverpool way. If you can’t DIY install then he can do it fairly cheap too (I’m guessing ~$200)

welcome to the forum you'll find plenty of wise minds here and i know there always keen for more CJ drivers.
Maybe for that price they just want to chop the exhaust tips off and replace with bigger ones and if all you want is louder then its probably the way to go. Although its up to you what you do i personally would bank that 200 for the short term and then but it towards the headers/ cat back etc and do it piece by piece so when you are done you have a kickass exhaust that will give you the nice sound your after and the performance improvement also.
From personal experience car modding works out a lot easier on the pocket if its done once and done right. just my 2c.
I know zip about your model car but just in general this rule applies.

:( <- That's how I feel now about the wheels, but oh well. Thanks for the help regarding that.

I've decided to go catback, figure it is well within my original exhaust budget ($1k) so might as well. I'll make sure everything installed is stainless.

The VRX wheels idea isn't too bad, I remember thinking 'if only they came in black' but there are none available on eBay/Gumtree except for a set of Ralliart ones (I think they're the same) but at $800 + cost of recolouring it might be worth just getting a new set of aftermarket ones for a few hundred extra.

Now I know max size/width/stud pattern I gotta worry about offset. Anyone have any idea? The Mitsubishi service team didn't

Too dear for me :D, besides, I'm mainly doing visual upgrades at this stage.

5x114.3 is probably the most common stud pattern so you will have no trouble finding plenty of wheels to choose from. 18x7.5/8 would be about the normal sort of sizing for these cars. Best offset will all depend on the width of the wheel you choose and the type of fitment you're going for. Depends what you want with them, big, stanced, race, bling, its all up to your personal tastes. Get on ebay and tempe and have a look through the styles and get an idea of what you want.

Thanks for confirming, I'm looking at all the 18x8 5x114.3 wheels I can get prices for online. Re: offset I don't really mind any offset as long as it doesn't look really weird to the outside world, like these:

Do you know what sort of mm variation would still look normal?

.

7.5" wide will generally fit, but 8" depending on the offset and if you lower or not you will probably need to roll the rear guards.

As for exhaust mate either go full hog from block to tip (so new extractors, high flow cat, hot dog and muffler) or just an axle back (rear muffler) with extractors. The CJs already have a decent sized pipe in nice stainless steel and you're really just pissing money down the drain doing a cat-back on an otherwise stock CJ...

theres no way anything you could put on would look like that supra as it has a huge widebody kit on it.
basically with offset i think around 30-40 offset would be ideal. basically the lower the offset, the more the wheels poke out of the guards

Lol, I was just giving exaggerated examples of how I don't want my car to look.

Hmmm...guess I'll have to call the local exhaust guy again regarding the stock 'decent sized pipe'.
