Changing cluster

Found a tacho cluster at the wreckers and thinking of using it. Not to fussed if it's not going to work but would like to try. Tested it and everything basically works except for the tacho and the odometer is different. My car is a '97 model coupe. Is it as easy as wiring up the tacho to get it working? and can the odometer be reset (legally) to the original reading or is there another way around it. Any knowledge would be great.

Cheers.

As for the odometer are you able to pull apart the cluster and swap odometers?

IIRC you need to run an extra wire in or something like that for the tacho and pretty sure there was a thread on MLGA about it, but that's not going to be much help at the moment.

Hopefully another CE owner can help you out soon.

I've never heard of anyone setting the odometer to what the existing one has done, but the tacho installation is fairly simple.

It involves grounding something, and taking a wire out of one of the plugs out the back. Can't remember off-hand but there was a pretty good DIY on MLGA... Anyone here ever save a copy of it?

Nah they are different colour. Can you just take out the display screen part or is the speedo + needle and everything all connected? Yeah there is no wire running to the back of the cluster for the tacho have to get it done.

don't think he's talking about running to the back of the cluster. i think he is talking about running from ecu to one of the looms that the cluster plugs into.

if your dodgy....locate teh pin on the ecu plug you need. Get a piece of wire(thin-ish?), wrap it around the pin a few times really really carefully and JAM THE PLUG IN. it worked for me, albeit a horrible solution. then just run that to the back of the cluster clamp a ring terminal onto it and bolt it on. then connect up the ground tach wire somewhere aswell. donee

well I wouldn't expect myself to actually do something properly. I never actually intended to keep it like that though, got lazy. i was pretty shocked when I saw the tacho needle actually working to be honest.

Sorry was half asleep when i wrote this and forgot to add the rest

Odo: If its the same colour as your old one just open them up and change the whole speedo gauge. Or just the face, get a 2 spoons under each side of the needle and lever it off, then undo the two srews and swap it.

Tacho: Get another ecu pin and plug it into pin 58. Then run the other end with a ring crimp to a screw that says tacho on the back/blue sheet, and run a cable from the screw next to it to a ground.

Yeah local auto electrics is sorting out the tacho for me and looking into how to reset or fix km's on odometer to what the old cluster has. May need to send away unless there is another solution.

Guys - I have a tacho cluster to go into the Mirage, the actual install looks straightforward and I've found the blue pin in the engine bay near the firewall on the passenger's side to plug into. I'll find an earth but I'm a little confused as to where on the blue circuit board backing to the cluster the wires have to connect to.

On the blue board there appear to be three screws that sit behind the actual tacho, as per here:

So...which goes where? I think I know where they go, but not actual take a punt on blowing up the cluster know.

Thanks in advance.

on my cluster there is only the 2 plugs plugged in, no extra wire connected to any screws

Ring terminal on the screw that follows the tacho earth and you will need another screw for a terminal on the next copper line up. (yours doesnt have a screw for some reason). One to a neutral somewhere and the other to the plug.

Hope that makes sense.

So....the far left screw, the earth goes under there (ring lug, as you say), and the positive (from the blue tacho plug in the engine bay) goes to the vacant screw spot (lower one the right of the rectangular hole). Right?

Or the other way round, not sure, you wont break it if you put it on the wrong side first (well mine didnt break anyway)

Wouldn't break it, it would most likely just run backwards.

Thanks for your assistance.

Yep, all good. It's in and working a treat now, swapped the speedos over so I've got the tacho cluster with my original k's on it. Fed the cabling into where the loom enters the firewall behind the glovebox and fed it through the back of the dash to the instrument panel. Lighting's pretty ordinary (consistent with pictures I've seen of Lancer dashes), will look into that later with the LEDs others have been using.

Thanks for the help. If anyone needs a tip on what to do just ask, it's actually fairly easy.

Main tips:
- as always, keep screws in a safe place
- always have the battery disconnected when changing connections
- make sure you cut enough cable to get from where you're connecting either to earth/ground or the tacho plug, to the instrument panel with a little left over
- all the screws need to be in on the back of the cluster for the various items to work (speedo, tacho and so on)
