Hi All,
A recent Facebook post has inspired me to put this in a thread.
Not saying I know a lot, but since I have spent many hours looking this stuff up, I thought I would share my knowledge for an easy reference guide to looking up parts from JDM model Chassis Codes.
First of all, we know our 97-02 models are CE's for Mirages, Coupes and Sedans.
Mitsubishi Australia borked the chassis naming system around the CC chassis area. CE in JDM chassis is actually the chassis code for a Evo 2/3 which is a CE9A which is similarly based of what we call a "CC" Chassis.
I will break the the chassis code into 2 parts eg CE & 9A.
First 2 characters of the Chassis and their meanings.
CJ - 2WD Coupe or Hatch
CK - 2WD Sedan
CL - 4WD Hatch
CM - 4WD Sedan
CN - 4WD Sedan (reinforced due to it being an evo 4 chassis)
CP - 4WD Sedan (reinforced due to it being an evo 5/6 chassis)
Last 2 characters of the Chassis and their meanings (not all last 2 characters appear on the above chassis codes)
1 - 4G13 1.3L
2 - 4G15 DOHC 1.5L
4 - 4G92 Mivec 1.6L
5 - 4G93 1.8L (only appears on CK Chassis) or 4G93T 1.8L Turbo (only appears on CM Chassis)
6 - 6A11 V6 1.8L (only appears on CK Chassis)
8 - 4D68 2.0L Diesel (only appears on CK Chassis)
9 - 4G63 2.0L Turbo (only appears on CN & CP Chassis)
0 - Utility
A - Passenger
C - Cabriolet
M - Compartment
V - Specialized
W - Touring
VIN Code and their meanings for CE Chassis and onward (Is not the same for CC and older):
1: J - Japan (Country of Origin)
2: M - Mitsubishi (Manufacturer)
3: F - Mitsubishi (Extra Manufacturer ID)
4: S - Sedan (M for 3 Door Hatchback, X for 5 Door Hatchback [E.G Colts], D for Coupe and L for Wagon)
5: R - Automatic (N for Manual)
6: C - As per above Chassis Codes List
7: K - As per above Chassis Codes List
8: 5 - As per above Chassis Codes List
9: A - Passenger (W for Touring)
10: 3 - 2003 (S is 95, T is 96, V is 97, W is 98, X is 99, Y is 00, 1 is 01, 2 is 02 etc)
11: U - Nagoya Plant (Japan) (T for Tonsley Park SA)
12: 1 - Serial Number
13: 2 - Serial Number
14: 3 - Serial Number
15: 4 - Serial Number
16: 5 - Serial Number
17: 6 - Serial Number
The last 6 Numbers are the Plant serial number, whether it determines build number your car is.
This is all the codes relevant to a CE (Australian) based Chassis.
I can also do the same for the CC and CH Chassis if people would like.

I also found some goodies, here are the original car assessments by the Department of Transport when presented with each car to pass ADR.
