OK major problem here. My car is currently not running. It is running rough as hell when I start it (sounds like lawn mower) for 5 seconds and is then turing off. It is definately getting fuel as I can smell the unburnt gases. This problem seems to be intermittent as I origionaly thought it was caused by the cold because it ran fine in the afternoon. I have removed MAF and given it a good clean with contact cleaner but hasnt helped, have also taken to auto electrician and had it scanned which came up with no errors. Its leads are Bosch and NGK plugs bout 1000ks old. When it is working it runs mint no problems at all. This really has me baffled. Any help would be appreciated.
 
How would I check a vaccum leak? Yeah I'm starting to think it might be the fuel filter, dont know the last time it was changed
 
fuel filter doesn't sound like a bang-immediate problem... but have a look at it.

have you pulled a plug, left it on a lead to see if it is sparking?
 
just change the fuel pump in one of my cars after this was happening. sometime they slowly go out. and the have the symptom of running good once the car warms up which fools you.
 
If this problem gets to expensive (e.g. over $500) it looks like it wil be more economical to replace engine with 4g93t, I can get one for $600 plus $700 install. Ive heard that the old shape gsr motor wont fit, Whys that?
 
If u want a 4g93t ten you will need to get 1 from a cm5a gsr

It will be cheaper finding a FTO 6a12 mivec engine or even a 2nd gen 4g63t rvr engine

Unless u wanna spend the bigger bucks on a evo4/5/6/7/8/9 engine
 
Actually the 96-00 GSR engines go for cheap in NZ. I've been looking on trademe at them and they can be had for well under a grand, but will likely require a rebuild. Is your car a 1.8 standard? If so the gearbox should bolt straight to the 93t engine. But yes, you need to make sure it is not the early model CC orientation. Parts like the loom and ecu also go for very cheap.
 
Problem resolved. was the cam angle sensore. Part cost 140 plus 50 labour. Seems to have less power than i remember now though....
 
Yeah I know the auto electrician went ahead and fixed it anyway. I'm selling the car anyway, hoping to upgrade to the asti RX mivec.
 
If you spot any Liberos at a wreckers with any cool gear on it, rear spoiler, rear brakes etc, send me a PM i would be semi keen on them depending on there price. Though they sound pricey by your description.
