alright so i was doing abit of facebooking just then and a mate told me about this site called carmate.com(NSW based).... anyway i was looking through it and i found this sick body kit for my 99 ce

http://www.carmate.com.au/product_detai ... LAN982FVFK

anyway it was only $1023.95 so im really thinking of buying it but ive never painted a body kit before and they are gonna charge $700 for a full body kit spray...
would it be cheaper for me to do it myself and if so is it easy to spray the body kits(since ive never done it)

TBH, you could spray it yourself, but it probs wont turn out as the pictures show. If you got a mate whos handy with body work, get him to help and go for it. Otherwise you will have to learn how to use a spray gun, prepare panels etc.

Not saying dont do it, just saying either get them to do it for you, or be preapre to put in a massive amount of effort and learning and research, or put up with a $5 rattle can job.

I've heard really bad stories about carmate and poorly fitting kits. A lot of people are forking out another 1k and more so that the kit will actually fit properly and to paint it. If you're looking for a good kit that fits really well I'd try our sponsor fibre sports. Really good feedback on them and not too expensive either I think.

I've dealt with carmate in the past and yes there kits aren't the best.the fit is poor and the unevenness of the fiberglass made it alot of work to get to fit right.
Bodykits aren't really the " in" thing right now but if you have your heart set on one then try another bodykit supplier
Also don't be a tight ass when getting it painted.don't try it yourself because it will look *poo*.
Pay the professionals to do it or atleast,a mate with actual painting experience
We got enough banged up rice boxes on the roads,we don't need another lol

What kit were you thinking of getting anyway?

ow right just realised that the link didnt work... haha

i was thinking of getting the Mitsubishi Lancer 1996-2004 CE 2Dr "FV Style" Full Kit
Part Number: MITLAN982FVFK

looks really good imo and if fibre sports can get me this then i will have no problem going through them

My advice, save your money and dont waste it on body kits, most people here will agree that a stock lancer looks better than a lancer with a bodykit, only thing you need to do in terms of exterior work is lower it and some wheels, if you really wanna spend the money use on handling and braking mods.

Agreed that is def money better spent, but everyone has there own tastes and depending what you want from your car. A wise person once told me a tip I personal use when it comes to spending more then a few hundred dollars on anything, which is leave it and think about it for a week then after that if you still really want it then go for. you may have a whole new thought by then if not at least you know your sure about.

If you like that kit then go for it buddy
If you do buy it atleast keep your original bumpers so if they ever get damaged or you want to sell your car you can simply put it back on
A car with a bodykit is harder to sell because it mightn't be everyone's taste

alot of people on here like their lancers to look stock. but in my opinion i would prefer to have my lancer looking unique and my own so i completely understand your want for a bodykit. my advice is just keep watching ebay untill some one sells a 2nd hand one for cheap.

oh i dont mean raped ones. i mean bargain ones. theres one im buying now and he bought it for his car than crashed his car before putting it on now selling it cheap.

another reason why it is sometimes better to buy a second hand kit is that these cars have been out for a long time and there is plenty of kits to choose from... but getting a second hand kit means that it has already been fitted to a car so you do not have to mess around with fitment all that you need to do is a little prep work in getting the kit nice for spraying, and all this means is a little body filler (if the kit is glass) a little spray filler (to fill in the chips) and sand it till it is smooth.
$700 for painting is cheap especially for a whole kit whichh makes me think that the quality is not going to be there in both fitment and looks, if you are patient MR kits look the nicest and are becoming more popular and becoming more available I have been picking up MR kits for the past year and they cost me bugger all.

paint costs for a set of side skirts - front bar - front lip - rear pods for say a white lancer (white uses more paint than any other colour) I would probably need a full litre at $130. then the thinners $30, clear coat 1lt $46. hardener $20 and thinner $2. this is not including the other materials needed to get the job done sand discs, wax and grease remover spray putty fillers, then the equipement compressor with storage tank $700, hose $60 fittings $100 water filter $80 sray guns x 2 (one for paint one for clear) $300+ each, paint mask $200, measure cups and paint strainers.... for me to do a full kit can take up to 30 hours of time and that is with a kit that does not need a lot of work, I think you get the idea as to how much it costs and the time spent doing it... come the end of summer I am well and truely over painting parts. Roll on winter so I can do engine work.

mmk well i remember seeing a vertex kit somewhere for $700 but im not sure if thats standard price or not
