G'day all,
Just got the ELM 327 mini today , an interface that plugs into the OBD2 port. I haven't had much time to play with it yet but seems pretty good so far. Using Torque pro, dashcommand and OBD car doctor on android phone. Can look at real time stuff like revs, accel, throttle, speed, boost (or vacuum), coolant temp, 0-110km/hr, 1/8, 1/4m time, HP etc. Plus look at and clear fault codes etc.

Anyone use one before and what do you think of it?

I’ve got two at home, and for a basic scan tool, their incredible. I’ve only needed to use Torque pro. Some cars it does not cominicate with at all (some early odb2 like my Ce) . Really good for reading and logging dtc’s in cars that it will comunicate with. Some Euro cars like BMW only allow for dtc reading and basic info output only.

Really came into its own when the VTEC solenoid started to cause issues on the oddessy - would cause engine light and limp mode to activate. In limp mode the car was undrivable, couldnt really even limp home with it as the power decrease was too strong to even climb hills! The ability to clear fault memory and view a stored dtc meant that I could get the thinh out of limp mode and set me on the diagnostic pathway to uncovering the faulty component.

So all up - is it worth its $5 ebay price? Hell yes.
Will it remove the need for dealer level scan tools that cost thousands every year to keep current? Hell no, but arguably for the home DIYer/Mech, its the perfect little addition - even if only to keep you entertained while you drive.

Yes, it was the $5 ebay special. Got it for a bit of fun more than anything. It has helped me out already though. The day after i got it my wife's car (2010 ford focus XR5T) had the check engine light come up. The fault come up as 'inlet valve runner fault'. I rang local ford dealership and told them the specific fault code number (forget what it was now) and of course they said i'd have to bring it in for them to look at. I asked them for a ball park figure and they said around $400. I cleared the code (expecting it to come back) but so far two weeks have gone by and it hasn't re-occurred.
