another car but with a problem

I am looking at picking up a car next weekend I have not committed to buying this, and just thought I would ask the question first and get peoples opinions...
Car - VRX 2000
Engine - 4G15 Manual

problem - car will not start...
Owner (mature aged female has owned car since 2003) had to have a knee operation and could not drive car for a while so car sat for a few months - and then she found due to knee operation it was too difficult to drive a manual,
Her house got broken into and car keys were stolen
She calls a mobile key cutter and key coder
He says to her that the car will not start because of something to do with key reader or ECU

So what do you think sounds a bit strange that after all this time the cars ECU has a problem - or do you think the guy cutting the keys and setting the key code could not do it...
I think from memory Mitsubishi charge around $100 or so to do the key thing.
or should I just go and get matching ecu key reader keys and barrels.

The car if I get it will be for my daughter as car has only done 150kklm and looks to be in good condition just minor things need to be done... car is also unlicensed and owner is wanting $1500... break down of the car is really only worth $500 -$800...

opinions please.

Sounds like the key to immobilizer wasn't matched to me. Or was going to cost her too much. If it was cheap enough a barrel and keys from another car sounda like a good enough idea, and then they just need to be programmed.

pay mitsu $100 let them do it, ignition barrels are a pain in the arse to remove from a car, they snap the bolt heads off in the factory once its bolted in
need to cut a channel for a flat head screw driver to work on them to get it out of the car.

"The car if I get it will be for my daughter"

chris, i reckon you just need to get a NEW key from mitsubishi, and have that coded to the ign barrel/ECU.

im fairly certain you can code the new key to suit. vr4 dudes do it all the time when we only get one key with the car

hey guys thanks for the input - and I will get the car to Mitsubishi and see if they can match and code a key as a starting point... I suppose the thing that puts me off is actually pulling the dash out to get to the key reader have taen a few ignition barrels and I am not too daunted by doing that as I have a little chisel that puts the slots in perfectly so I can get a screw driver in...
Will talk to my friends at Mitsubishi and get some deffinate answers... will let you all know how it all goes

New keys cut to suit, drop into dealer get them to recode the key. Max 10 mins to recode, shouldn't be anymore than 30-50 bucks.

hmm sounding better by the moment I still have not contacted Mitsubishi yet must do it tomorrow...

thanks for all info really do appriciate it

thats a hell of a lot better than i was quoted,
i went to mitsi at campbelltown and was quoted $210 for a single key cut and coded
so i told him to stick his machine up his ass and walked off

I got the same $160 for coding alone.

ok minor update... went and spoke to them at Mitsubishi and they said I would have to go to XXX company and get key cut... $$ unknown - key - cost unknown, recoding key $140. hire trailor to get car in $70 hire trailor to get car home $70... chance of working unknown

So went to my local wreckers who will get me a ECU from a 2000 model Lancer key barrel key reader door locks and key $200 chances of working 100% or money back

so guess which way i am going... just seems to make more sense to do it this way rather than the other way thru Mitsubishi...

hey ECU for a CE lancer from Mitsubishi is $2400 key reader $500... barrels and ignition I did not even bother to ask....

So bought a different car this one I know is a going concern and is going to be easily fixable (the neglect people have on cars...) anyway this car has that stupid black rubber bumper stripping running around the car just need to get that off pull a small area of the radiator support bar new bonnet and front bar and she will be sweet as... will post up some pics later
