2001 CE Mirage 1.5 Auto Problems

Hi guys,
Grateful for any advice/suggestions on the following problem.
Recently picked up a very clean CE Mirage with partial service history and 195k's.
It's been running well until a couple of days ago.
The neutral indicator light started flashing suddenly while the car was in drive and it became very sluggish and changes were clunky.
I believe the box had gone into 'limp' mode and also seemed to have 'lost' low and top gears.
So I checked the following: gearbox connections, fluid level, selector action and reset the TCM.
Flashing neutral light went out and normality was restored but only for a couple of km!
So any suggestions on anything I can check/replace which may help?
Are these 4 speed autos fragile and is around 200k their lifespan?
As there are so many of these cars at my local wreckers and parts are cheap I'm tempted to just replace the box if it's dying. Is this fairly straightforward and anything to watch out for?
I suspect it's not worth a tranny shop looking at it due to cost and value of the car.
Thanks
