What to look for

Hi Guys me again still just shopping around. i have a mate going down to tewantin for me tomorow to check out a 98 CE Coupe Lancer MR. with 130000klms on the clock.

i would just like to know when the lancers go through there major services so he can check if it is up to date and a big service is not required soon. secondly what problem can go wrong with them. he will be test driving it what should he look at. and spots rust out in particular. as much advice would be best please since i will not be looking at the car for myself. and i dont know much about these sort of cars anyways because it is my first mitsuibishi

cheers brandon

Gday mate,

Lancers, like most cars, have their timing belt done at around 100,000kms this should probably include things like the waterpump too. This service I reckon would be ~$1,000 and should defo have been done on a 130,000 km car, if not I'd be questioning if the owner has maintained it well.

As what to look for... biggie would probably be white or black smoke from exhaust, espesh when giving it gas hard. White/bluey smoke generally means its burning coolant and balck its burning oil, if Im not mistaken.

Visual things would probably be something like clearcoat peeling. Painting is extremely expensive so its best to go for a clean and well looked after car. Red is known to be the worst colour for the clearcoat to be gone.

Hope this helps you out a bit.

Gearbox should be smooth and shouldnt feel like its missing teeth. Clutch should not slip, you can test this by accelerating hard in a high gear. If the revs jump before the car speeds up the clutch is rooted.

I have noticed that you cannot get Lancers into first gear unless you're stopped or close to stopped so it shouldnt surprise you if you cant put it into first while moving.

i check under dash to see if someones home jobbed the wires under there too, but thats just me :)

i cant get mine into first most of the time while moving slowly either, just doesn't go, quite annoying for me!

same, but i generally pop it in neutral, take clutch off, put clutch on, give it a little chirp on the gas and put it in first no probs ;) always worked that method for me :D

either its because there is no first synchro or its a poorly functioning one...

Me thinks it may not have a first synchro because ramming it down from high revs tends to shred the first synchro anyways...

Double-clutch and matching revs... Good Cesario, sounds like driving a Road Ranger 18-speed truck!

ahah, thats actually where i learnt how to 'properly' shift :p dont have my HR lic, but i can drive a big rig well enough :D

well, you could go back and get your HR, is what I am doing... upgrading my MR for a HR...

Wont have a first synchro, not that old a car anyway. You're not meant to change down to first, unless you are stopped and about to take off again. It's a low speed gear designed to get you moving and not much else (except maybe skids...).

got mine in to first once while doing 110, lol only got clutch out half way though, was scary

LOL scary alright

and thanks for all the info guys will be very helpful
so my list should include
timing belt 100,00klms (check service history)
White or Black smoke from exhaust when revved hard
The clear coat Peeling, Red is the worst
Spot rust in roof
Check the colour of the fluids. EG. radiator, engine oil?
smooth gearbox
no clutch slippage
do not worry about not being able to get into first gear while moving (it is normal)
check under the dash for dodgy wiring

is this everything covered i should look at when buying a new (second hand) lancer

had my mate look over the lancer and he came back to my with big grins.

he said the paint wa in immaculate condition no smoke gearbox was amazing (he is used to driving a diesil ute) and was just very happy with it.

now just got to convince dad into giving me some money to buy it because i will not get money for my ute till the 24th of this month
