Tiptronic Not Working?

Hey guys...gotta a problem with the tiptronic on my Lancer. It stopped shifting up and down. Though all the normal automatic gears (P, R, N, D) work fine to my understanding.

In the beginning it used to work once in a blue a moon but now it just stopped working completely.

Here's a checklist of things I've already done:

- Electronic transmission computer scan: no problem found
- Transmission service: car goes quicker but problem still not solved

I am considering replacing the entire gear shifter module unless you guys have some idea of what the problem may be..?

Any help would greatly be appreciated... :)

Thanks

I have no idea the ecu allows you to make shifts I am leaning towards this but you don't have a CEL so... Might be best to take it to Mitsubishi or give them a call and have a chat...

The shifter is not the brains to the shifting on the auto and tiptronic cars.

When in d does the transmission shift correctly between gears and change gears correctly?

Could be the switches in the shifters of course

I've spoken to a Mitsubishi service department guy and he said it could be anything so it's best to get a diagnostics done. :D

I was okay with this until he told me the outrageous price tag that comes with it: $140 odd per hour to diagnose a problem. The guy has no clue how long it would take and I could be couple of hundreds of dollars out of pocket by then.

It changes gears correctly (1 through to 4) to my knowledge but it's a little rough sometimes.

Could be the switches in the shifters of course

Just visited another Transmission/Auto Electrician specialist and they say it's definetely an electrical issue and reckon it's either one of three things:

1. blown fuse (not possible as gear '1' is displayed on the dashboard when in tiptronic mode
2. switch inside the gear shifter module needs replacing
3. worst case scenario is the transmission computer

Pretty sure Repco can do the same thing for less

Cool i'll give it a go. I never knew Repco does diagnostics. Thanks alot.

Funny thing is when the tiptronic did work there was some sort of clicking sound from the shifter each time the gear was changed manually. That noise has disappeared since this issue.

So I too am leaning towards the switch. Better yet I can pickup an entire shift module for $40

What do you guys think?

Pull it apart & figure it out as you go along. Can't see it being that complicated

Assuming switches are a normal contact style thing (normally open or normally closed), use a multimeter to check for continuity.

When you say tip tronic doesn't work, is it stuck in 1st?
(can't see both switches failing at once, but if the shift up switch has, would be plausible)

I would leave this for a trans. Specialist aye, just because ive seen people make situations worse by toying with them lol it may be complicated, or it may be simple, but without proper tools such as diagnostic computers, you'll have a hard time,

Yeah when in tiptronic mode the gear is stuck in 1st.

When it was working, only the shift up ('+') worked not shift down ('-').

Now nothing!

Hmm, well that sounds interesting.

As above though (and as always when you read things on a forum...), if your not that confident in fault finding, would be wise to leave to someone with more knowledge/experience.

Sounds like a good idea to me. :D

I found some pics of the shifter as well as a breakdown of all the components in the shifter.

I feel confident it's the switch due to the now absent clicking sound that existed when gears were being changed.

But I really dont mind forking out $40 to get an entire used shifter module presuming that a brand new switch(es) will cost around the same price from Mitsubishi.

Anyone know if replacing this is just a matter of disconnecting/connecting the cable from the gearbox to the shifter or is there something else required as well (i.e. programming new shifter to gearbox ...etc)?

mmhmmm found the culprit..

Faulty tiptronic switch!!

Picked up entire shifter unit for $40 and replaced along with a working switch.
Old Shifter is in a dispicable state, see for yourself:

No clue Jazza. I think this car was given quite a beating by its previous owners. :(
Anyway its cleared up now, so i'll keep cruising until another problem arises.
