Reversing Brake noise

Gday Everyone :)

Im not sure where to start as this has persisted from the day i bought the car it doesnt cause me any issues its just annoying and embarrassing :(

I have been to many places and been told the same thing.

OK, well occasionally now all the time i reverse the car it makes a high pitched squeeling sound coming from rear brakes/rotors. Now this doesnt appear to happen to fronts.
When i bought the car from a dealer about 2yrs ago it was doing it then so i took it back and they said ok it was a build up of brake dust, an that they cleaned it out. The noise stopped for about 3weeks.
It then persisted. so i took it to my local mechanic as i was at a loss :( he also said same thing and that there is nothing i can do about it LIVE WITH IT :(

However i am almost certain that i dont know anyone other lancer driver with this issue. I am really keen to fix it. i was going to upgrade rotors to some slotted or drilled ones but i was then told dont bother it wont fix it.

Does anyone have any insight into what the issue might be and maybe how i can fix this?

If needed i can record the sound and post it here.

Could be pads, rotors might be warped, hub bearings might be worn

Have you tried reversing fast then slam on the brakes hard etc (obviously u want to do this where its safe)

There is an actual term for this, believe it or not; FORCE-COUPLED EXCITATION. Usually, its the resonance between the caliper and pad or caliper and pad backing plate. Simple answer, you need to take your pads out again, clean the pads, backing plates and anti-squeal plate. Then, adhere the backing plates to the pad, or grease between them. Add some grease to the contact points on your caliper (piston and cage).

If you do this and it is still noticeable, drive slowly forward and apply your handbrake. Let us know if the squeal settles after you let off the handbrake and how long until it returns... A lot of cars have a nasty habit of the handbrakes being poorly adjusted.

Let us know how you get along...

Just to confirm, have you got drum or disc on the rear?

Something to consider... In my old CE Coupe, the previous owner had fitted some amazingly cheapo pads & shoes. Used to get some odd resonance type noises at times when under light braking.
After fitting some new pads & shoes, never had a problem with it after that

Ok ill give this ago i havent done much testing myself in terms of how to fix it i know it happens more when its wet especially right after i wash the car :?
If i drive forward i never ever get the noise it only happens when i reverse.

They are discs on rear.
When i got the car the pads were pretty new as for type or brand and quality no idea. but i have since changed them over to the 4wd bendix pads as that was my first instinct that pads were low an causing issues so i just bought some changed them and still didnt make a difference :(

Wanted to ask; how low are the rear pads getting...?

Could it be the tell-tale?

Since changing them i havent actually checked to see if they are low but as they havent been changed that long ago i figured that wouldnt be an issue. hmmmm maybe i should check.

Doubt it will be the pad life then, you usually get 4 -5 years out of a set of rear brake pads, on a daily driver (not race car!)

There is a hot line fix from Mitsubishi, you have to change the rear caliper pin's top to bottom. Glue the backing plates to the pad, rub the pads on a rough concrete surface. Go for a blast round the block and bed the pads in.

Alternatively drop into a Mitsubishi dealer and get them to perform the fix. It may or may not cost you depends how far out of warranty the car is.

Hmmm i really dont wanna sound like a noob but can you elaborate on that a bit more? im not sure what you mean by pins?

He is suggesting that the configuration of your rear brakes has two pins, retaining the pads. The 'fix' suggested is to reverse the top pin for bottom.

Additionally, he is suggesting (as I did earlier) that you adhere the pad to the backing plate.

'Roughing' the pads, is what everyone does when putting in new pads... It wont help with your worn pads (since the pads would have worn into the grooves evident on your discs already).

Hmm thanx for that info guys ill give it all ago an see what the results are ill let you know as soon as possible :)

Another thought, chaser may have been suggesting another pad 'roughing' in case you have a rock between a pad and disc, they can squeal if there is a rock in there too. Roughing the pad will dislodge any foreign objects...

Let me assure you that you're not alone.
edit** I drive a 07 CH velocity with rear discs and plenty of meat left on the pads

Pretty much every day when I reverse out of my steep driveway, and brake I get a squeal from the rear brakes.
Happens more so on cold days that mild, but usually most of the time I get it.

You're loading the wheels more the usual when you're reversing (especially with so much more load over the rear axle in my case) so it's only logical that they're going to whine a bit when you're asking them to do something they're not entirely used to. Ofcourse that is not to say it should be there at all, but it's probably something small.
I'd say take to to a dealer and do some hand waving with a firm voice and get them to fix it for you. ;)

When I take mine for it's 90k (only 5K away, how exciting...) I'll ask them and let you know - but if you fix it before then, then let me know!

Wow!!! I'm so excited to know that there is someone else out there that has this problem. Umm I am looking into now as we speak I been told that a the CH has a rear shoe for the handbrake and that it may be worn on the bottom side. So therefore this would be the leading edge if reversing I will be pulling mine off to have a look I'll let you know!! =)

I'll look into it more tomorrow prolly

hi,

I've had the same issue ever since I bought the car. Mine is not only a standard squealing noise but also a loud humming, groaning sound (its embarressing, especially when reversing).

My previous rear pads were minimal so I replaced them and the noise stopped for about a month. This was in March 2012. Ever since then when I reverse the noise has returned and also sometimes when I drive.

It only occurs when I slowly depress the brake pedals.

Anyone found any solutions to this (would greatly appreciate it)?
