No heat from heater

Hey guys, just picked up a 99 manual ce GLI off a friend for a steal and long story short the heater doesn't work.

I've flushed the coolant but still no luck. No heat comes out at all. The temp gauge gets to about halfway and the car doesn't overheat, so I'm gonna assume that rules out faulty water pump or thermostat.

What's the most likely case for heaters not working on these cars? Should I flush the heater core? Any tutorials out there for this?

The car hasn't done a lot hard yards. so I'm assuming it's nothing major, it's only at 170xxx KM. There is the lightest amount of white smoke (barely noticeable) that comes out of the exhaust when you give it some gas - not sure if this is relevant

Hey mate,

have a look at the heater hoses in the engine bay. There should be two hoses running to the firewall - make sure they haven’t been bypassed. Very common the heater core leaks - and they get bypassed as a cheap fix.

if theyre connected and warm when the engine is warm - the. You have a blocked heater core. PITA to sort but do-able.

Like Sdate said,

It's very common for them to either leak or for the actual bits that poke through the firewall to become brittle with age and heat and either Leak or have been broken trying to remove the hoses or the evap box.

It's a likely possiblity that it's been bypassed

Thanks guys. Yep it's definitely been bypassed. The male insert on the firewall appears to be damaged (enough to not be able to fit a hose over it without a leak). So I guess I could be lucky and the heater core it's self has no leaks
