Hi guys, I'm planning to paint my wheels to gloss black this coming wednesday.

So steps that I'm going to take

washing the grease/wax off - Any product recommendation?
scuff - I have this
sand it - use a light sand paper? (wet and dry)?
wash it again - Which paint thinner product?
prime - What kind of primer? Flexible primer for wheels?
color it - VHT?
clear coat - VHT again?
let it dry for one day

But before doing this, I will need some suggestion on what type of product will you choose? This is my first time spraying wheels.

I will post the whole process in pictures next week.

Thanks

using paint thinners to wash them??

make sure you wipe the wheel with wax/grease remover before every coat of paint

Yea, after the sand, should I use paint thinner to wash them? I've done some researched last night and some video use paint thinner. Or is it special purpose thinner?

So are you saying that:

First coat of prime
wax/grease remover

Then

second coat of prime
wax/grease remover

and so on.

Then I will be doing the same when I'm appling the color?

Won't the wax and grease remover remove some of the prime/color as well?

wash wheel with like car wash etc
sand
wax & grease
paint
clear
sand

thats the way i do all my stuff

So I did all my research and I'm ready to act BUT

there is one problem which can makes everything impossible.

So I heard that paint does not stick to alloy wheel that well?

all i did was wash mine with car wash product, tapped up the areas i wanted to keep chrome with masking tape, then sprayed gloss black spray paint over them. 3 coats of "squirts" from bunnings, then a clear coat of the same product. came up real nice, no chips, flakes, or anything. took 4 hours. and cost like 15$. see my old ride thread for pics

here's a quick step by step.

obviously wash the wheels with soapy water.

then clean with wax and grease remover.

get a scoth brite pad or green scourer and scuff up every surface to be painted.

wax and grease remover again.

blow the wheels to remove any dust.

then spray 3 coats of primer.spray 1 thin coat first and 2 medium coats.follow the cans insruction for how much time to leave between coats.

give the primer the correct curing time before sanding.

spray a very light coat of paint of the primer.it has to look like overspray.this is called a guide coat and nessasary when sanding primer.

just grab some 800 wet paper and a a spray bottle and snad the primer till all the guide coat is gone.

now wax and grease the wheels again and blow off any dust.

spray your colour,3 coats max,1st coat thin and then 2 medium coats.

spray 3 coats of clear coat after wards.
thats about it.
dont expect the wheels to be perfect but they will look good.the paint will chip off over time anyway.powdercoating is the best way to coat wheels but is expensive and the colours are limited.

This started on the 17th its now the 20th should be done!

Now that everyone is chimed in pretty much saying the same thing over and over.

Doesnt matter what paint it will be it is going to chip off anywayz.. When you get more doe and like the painted idea powder coat it.

.

I bought all the stuff except paint and it is raining today, heavily. Don't think I will be able to do it this weekend. According to the weather forecast, it will be raining until sunday. :(
