Fuel Economy Problems

Hey guys, been trying to work this out for a while now, so i get about 350 kms to a tank, i drive a 1.8l GLi Sedan, automatic, but any idea on my fuel problem
i fill it up about 36 -38 litres when the petrol light comes on, i think the most ive ever topped it up was like 40litres when i was hopping around corners the tank was that empty any ideas?? cheers :)

PS also, i have thsi rasp noise when i hit too high revs in first and second, the exhaust guy i asked said it was my cams, i stupidly didnt ask if ther was anything to do about it, so is there??
im a noob when it comes this stuff

;)

first, how long has it been since either: tune up, air filter change, had your vehicle checked?

Not knowing much about earlier Lancers, some common problems can be; clogged air filter, poor timing, poorly atomising injectors, faulty fuel pres regulator, poorly working airflow meter....

for example.

umm, i put a pod filter on it about a year ago now, the last tune upm havent had one, the last service was like 5000km ago, any idea how to check those things?

well, I can plug in an OBD reader and it interrogates those articles... mostly you check by servicing..

Your Pod filter will help the car breathe better, using more fuel...

Do you have a catalytic converter in your car, how many kays? Maybe it has collapsed.. blocking the evacuation of exhaust...

have you changed fuel types? Place you normally fill? All things that can potentially affect your readings?

Maybe your driving style has changed?

i get 4-500 km out of a tank with a 1.5l w/ pod + complete exhaust system.

Just wondering how much fuel usage would increase with a 1.8 + auto. I recommend replacing spark plugs + possibly replacing air filter and see if that helps you out :)

Maybe ...check your tyre pressure on the off chance they're running a bit flat as well

hope you have luck

Wish I had an answer for you on this mate cause i've got the same prob & been chasing a fix for it for yonks now, am lucky to get 300 out of mine(1.5) :(
This is just what i've done so fat to try & sort this & may help you some...
What sort of pod are you running? I tried 2 b4 getting a 3A racing pod that improved mine a little bit so maybe try one of those or a K&N pod, I also tried it with the stock air box back in but was no change in econ.
Replaced the stock headers for 4-2-1 headers.
New plugs & leads
Replaced TB
New(2nd hand & working ok) 02 sensor
Full & regular servicing. Last time in the mech found a bit of a compression prob & sorted that.
My mech reckons my cat is ok but am getting hold of another one off a mate to swap it out.
Will be getting a new press reg this week hopefully to give that a try.
Have gone from normal oil to fully synthetic stuff.
So far all these things have made slight improvements but there is still way too much being used so the hunt continues.

Also try keeping a log book of your fuel in & k's so you get to see what fuel your car likes best & any pattern in usage, Am only using 98 fuel now after seeing the diff in k's on other fuels.

my cars a 1.5auto with basicly half the stuff that youve done ^^
cai to k&n filter sports exausht with cannon
iridium plugs and good leads
fully synthetic oil
serviced blah blah
yeh i use 98 octance and wouldnt get any more then 250 to 300 km a tank max ay
i drove to and from work about 15 min trip every day and then just going places watever .

I used to get at least 500k's easy outa mine so it's got issues somewhere. You should be getting 450 plus outa yours aus.paso

r u sure ... mines an auto, i do alot of short distance driving, ive seen some other ppl on here saying they get 250 ..
then again ive never even seen my petrol light on so if i let it go that bit more i duno .. 250 to 350 max in an auto 1.5 that i have my foot down most the time till about 50km coz its a 1.5 lol .

should i be concerned or should i just keep driving ...

Not 100% sure man but if it was mine i'd be chasing better economy for sure. I've driven mine the same way since it was new(foot down to get it going) & this econ prob of mine only surfaced around the time I had the new exhaust fitted. As I said I used to get 500k's & that was from full down to 1/4, now 300 is lucky. I'd just be guessing but I reckon you should get between 4-450 out of yours.

lol i gte an easy 550kms out of mine, while thrashing the carp out of it 5k shifts

check spark plugs definity, coz i kno wen i checked mine at the start of the year they were the origonal factory ones from when the car was bought and they were F*CKED
specially #1 spark the hook was almost broken off

other than that if ur poddy is in the engine bay then thats also why ur fuel economy is ghey
they are the less drastic of problems

i got the coupe 1.5 auto new plugs and leads no pody just cai into k&n filter and get like 300 .. this always seemed fine to me now i just feel like my cars got sumthn wrong i dno where to even start lol .

not another problem =[

the problem is its an auto, heavyer trans and the fact that is an auto low capacity engine means u will be putting more load on the engine whereas a manual u'd just keep it in a lower gear
also its a 4 speed so hyway would chew a bit more fuel i assume

if ur a bit of a lead foot with the 1.5's i find they dont respond well to too much throttle at low rpm and actually lose power if u punch too hard under 3krpm
also i found wen i had the stock box with CAI feed i lost a bit of torque, compared to a smalled boxed poddy with cai feed, i think its cos the stock airbox is soo massive and u lose air velocity, but u still get some nice gains from that setup none the less

also there is something about cannons that everyone i kno who has one winges about their fuel economy, so either its the cannon muffler is shiit or it makes u wanna be more lead footed

The cannon itself won't make *fudge* all difference to your fuel economy. It's just that now you can hear your car, you'll drive it harder because of it.
