Engine mods for my 03 CH ES

Hi all :)

So ive spent alot of time, and money, on my late 03 Lancer CH ES, wheels, lights, suspension etc. and ive come to the point where i want to start on my engine. Just some starter modifications, in particular maybe some new hi flow extractors and/or performance exhaust system. Now i have a few questions for my fellow Lancer owners:

- Firstly, if i do in fact purchase and install these mods, will i have to reflash my ECU or make any other additional tuning tweeks?
- And secondly, does anyone have any good advice as to where i should purchase and install these mods? I live in the South East of Melbourne so anywhere in that area would be great.

Any advice and information would be great guys.

THANKS!

1) you will not HAVE to, reflash the ecu to run the mods, however if you do it will enhance the performance alot better
2) purchase from anywhere that sells them and install yourself engine work isnt all that hard once u start getting into it

also if you havent already please make a ride thread with some pics of your car and all current mods, cos you may have missed some mods that could help you out substancially especially in suspension

Is an ECU reflash a good starter mod? or should i stick to exhaust and extractors first off? Because at the moment its all stock.

And i guess i could give installation a try, ive never worked on my engine before though. I suppose i could find some DIY instructions somewhere and give it a shot.

Ill get a ride thread started ASAP aswell ;)

ECU reflash is what you do after you have done extractors, exhaust, throttle body, cold air intake, head port and polish, lightened flywheel, lightened underdrive pully and a HD clutch (maybe an lsd)
then get the flash and ur engine will run mint and make great power
reflash is done as a final thing as if you did it before mods once you have done all the mods after it the flash tune would need to be redone to make power

Okay then, that makes sense.

So do you think that im starting in the right place? Im trying to get some more power out of my car without spending a ridiculous amount of money, or dumping a turbo in.

Ive been researching exhuasts and it seems that 2.5" catback is the way to go. But if you have any more advice on this it'd be great.

:)

you are on the right track, do the mods i listed above and it will be a very nippy car

when doing exhuast, do the exteractors first as that is where the majority of gains are in exhuast upgrades, then follow up with a 2.5" catback with a mid resonator too keep noise down a bit and a 2.5" inlet oval muffler (dont get a cannon unless its a very good brand like magnaflow/fugitsubo as cheap cannons sound like ass)

lightened pully, lightened flywheel and HD clutch, throttle body if you can find a larger one and port ur plenum to match
then get your flash tune

A catback exhaust won't give you much of a power increase, just a nicer sound. For more performance you want better flowing headers (the section which comes off the block) and catalytic converter. So upgrade the top section of the exhaust (headers and cat) for power, and the bottom section of the exhaust (from the cat backwards) for noise :)
Hope that helps

Thanks heaps guys, this is really good information. As soon as i get onto purchasing and installing my mods ill post in here and let you know how its all going.

:)

In the meantime if anyone knows any particularly good and reliable place to buy these parts from id apprectiate that info too.

As much as I'd love a nice 2.4l mivec in there, I don't think I'll be forking out that much, and I would also have to get someone to put that in for me, cos I would definitely struggle. Maybe if I found one in Melbourne I might consider it :)

So i bought myself some nice new extractors, set me back $340. :)

I was gonna have a crack at putting them in myself but it looks like its not a straight replacement and id have to actually do some cutting and welding. Unfortuantely im not really set up for that so looks like ill be heading back for them to put em in, no big deal.

As far as exhaust goes, the same place i got the extractors from quoted me $560 for new system, with 2" exhaust, i was wondering if that is the right way to go? and if thats a good price??

Also i tried setting up a ride thread but for some reason i cant view pictures on my account, they just come up as red crosse. I tried multiple computers and it seems to still happen, so not sure what to do there. But id love to keep everyone updated on my mods if i could.

nice, hopefully you get some gains. are you sure you don't want to go with the 2.5"? you'd probably get better flow cause i think stock is like 2" anyway

Not sure, my stock system was pretty stuffed though, the new 2" is in and i can definitely tell the difference, so not sure if it was just that my stock one was stuffed up or that the 2" is actually bigger.

And i know for a fact that parts of the new system (muffler, etc.) are actually bigger because i got my stock system back and compared it. So all good

So i have my extractors and exhaust system installed, sounds great. And my pod filter just came sooo now it's time to put that in.

I think my beast is coming along nicely
