The tutorials on youtube are really only good if you have a lot of time to *fudge* around doing this. They're also really long and imo only work for 2 door cars. The majority of tuts say to have wires coming down from the dome light. Imo I think that's too much *fudge*ing around. Having it set up to the actual switch makes more sense to me.
Tools
-test lamp
-wire cutter
-screw driver
-wire stripper
-pliers
-wire
-heat shrink
-solder and soldering iron
-electrical tape
1. Remove your door trim and lift up your carpet a bit
2. unscrew the button on your door and pull out the setup gently. It will only come out like 3cm
3. detach the button from the socket. It's a simple clip thing.
4. Now I did it this way but it's probably not safe lol. The socket has 2 holes in it. One for the dome light and an empty one. (THE DRIVERS SIDE HAS 2 WIRES. THERE IS NO SPARE. YOU MUST SPLICE INTO THE WIRE THAT IS THE SAME COLOUR AS THE ONE ON THE PASSENGER SIDE)[EDIT: by doing this you will end up with a little problem. When you open the left door, both lights will turn on. If you open the drivers door, only the drivers side light will turn on] I tapped into the empty one. The button is used as the ground/earth . Well not the button but the screw. Since the button has a metal plate and the screw goes through the metal plate they obviously touch and continue the circuit. When the screw goes into the hole it finishes the circuit (Correct?). The hole has no paint inside it so that's how it can be grounded. (I figured this out with the test lamp haha)
5. After you've shoved your bare wire into the socket, push it further in as far as you can. I suggest you strip the wire about 2cm, or just enough so it comes out of the socket. Cut it flush and plug the button back into the socket.
6. Ok so now that you've wired up the ground, you're going to wire up the power. Find a grommet and push some wire through there.
7. Get under your dash and pull the wire through. Length can vary depending on where you put the LEDs
connect the wire coming from the engine bay to the positive terminal on your LED
Connect the wire coming from your switch to the negative terminal on your LED
8. Mock connect your wires to your LED strip and check if your set up works
If it all works, solder or twist everything together and heat shrink your connections. Put your carpet back into its place and put your other stuff back in its spot.
I connected the power cable to my existing sound system setup. I attached the wire to the cable that goes straight from my battery to my boot for my sub. I connected it just after the fuse so now the LED set up has a fuse
If you're having trouble soldering everything together (like I did) have a look at this. I only had trouble as I was using thick wire. Don't use 4mm wire like I did. It is very hard to work with. Use thinner wire OR cut the wire in half like I did here

If all is done correctly, your LEDs will turn on when you open the door.
