G'day mate.
Glad you found this info.
Before we go to much further please do not think of this info as the be all end all or think of it as a step by step how to.
I will give you all the info I have to date and show you what I did to make the 4G69 throttle body work on a 2012 Manual 4b11 lancer CY.
I need to thank a few people along the line who's brains I have picked and been helpful with information to help crack this.
In no set order we have "manic mechanic" , "Merlin Tuning" , "Troy" from clubcj.net , and myself, "Bumblebee"
I have spent 6 months working on this and learn a truck load.
This topic is not for the faint of heart, and if you think you will have this all read and all working in 5 minutes after you finish reading all of this, do yourself a favour and close this up now and move along and find something else to do with your vehicle.
This project to convert a 4B11/12 TB (throttle body) into a 4G69 can be 100% reversible to your stock 4b11/12 TB if you are very careful when you do this and take your time and do not damage anything.
Don't hold me or anyone else responsible if something breaks you do this modification at your own risk.
The best idea is to lay your hands on some second hand parts and put your stock working TB to one side in a safe place so if it anytime it all goes pear shaped ( trust me it can, and does sometimes) then you can reinstall the stock TB and carry on with life.
You will need an assortment of tools.
One will be a OBD2 tool and depending on what kind of phone you have be it android or iPhone depends on what you buy.
I have an android and I have found the $75 OBD2 tool from Jaycar will work. It's slow as a snail but to read codes in the ECU it will do the job. There is many better units out there. Go hunting and reading and find something you like. Buy it. Try it.
Also you will need a decent tool kit with a hammer , a punch, a rotary tool/die grinder, security's torx screws , ratchet , sockets , spanners etc. I'm sure if your a decent handy man you will have what is required. Oh yeah and some silicon , I use permatex silicon in a tube. Buy it from Autobarn. Under $20 it is blue . It's a gasket sealant.
And the last thing is a aluminium lid off a beer bottle or a bottle of wine (I'm not kidding about this. Trust me on this)
Did I tell you this is not a how to guide?
Oh good.
Also if you get this all wrong and a screw let's go out of the butterfly it could get sucked in your motor and be bashed around a bit by a hot piston and bashed into a cylinder head and a inlet and exhaust valve also.
You have been warned.
A little bit of background info.
The 4G69 motor is a Mitsubishi 2.4 litre single cam motor used in a number of different vehicles over the years.
We want one of these throttle bodies.
If you go hunting there is a few places they can be bought you can buy then new and second hand. I have seen second hand ones for under $100 . New ones from about $150 thru to $300.
Get one. From where is your decision.
You need it.
Next I strongly urge you to get another 4b11 throttle body ( if you have a 4b11 motor) and if you have a 4b12 motor get a spare 4b12 Throttle body. I understand the 4b11 and 4b12 use the same throttle body.
However you can research that and buy what you feel is right.
If you get a spare one I strongly suggest you bolt it to your car and test it before you go any further.(highly recommended)
Did i mention we do lots of testing?if you don't like doing that you need to stop reading now and find something else to do.
Now you have all your tools and a spare stock TB for your 4b11 or 4b12 and you tested it on your car and you know it works and you have a 4G69 throttle body and the tools mentioned earlier we can proceed.
We are almost getting to the fun bits!!
Hang in there.
You will need to take the stock TB and the 4G69 and lay them on their side and with the hammer and flat punch give the Welsh plug a decent whack in the centre.
Once you have given it a decent whack take to it with your rotary tool and a small griding tip and knock a hole thru the Welsh plug.
Once you have a hole thru it you can then murder the Welsh plug to remove it. If you bash down on the edges you will damage the inside of the throttle body housing.
Not a good idea.
Now the Welsh plug is removed ( have you figured out yet why we need the aluminium wine bottle or beer bottle lid for yet) we can roll the TB on its side and remove the 4 X torx security screws and remove the TPS cover plate.
Remove the idle gear between the electric motor and the drive gear that's mount to the side of the spindle for the butterfly.
Look at the butterfly and remove the two screws holding it in place.
Using the drive gear on the side of the throttle body rotate the spindle and slide the butterfly out the front of the TB
Do not press on the butterfly with the gears etc all in position you do run a risk of bending the butterfly and that's not a good thing.
Oh yeah did I tell you to get some pink.low strength Loctite? You need that to. Better go get some mate.
Ok so now we should have the intermediate gear removed
The butterfly removed and the 2 X screws holding it in
Do not mix up these parts. Best idea is a ice cream container and put all parts from each TB into its own container so you don't get confusing as to what is what.
Next thing we can do is go back to where you removed the Welsh plug.
In there is a small screw. You can undo it with a 7mm socket. Be very careful with the screw. It is on a spring mount behind the gear. Get too tough and you will snap a plastic spring locator.
Now while wearing safety glasses very very slowly can carefully hold the gear and slide the spindle out.
Now make sure you pay very close attention to what way the gear and spring are sitting and what way you need to press against it to make the spring take the tension..cos we are going to need this to rebuild it all shortly.
There's some decent spring tension there so do be careful and have a decent grip of the gear and slide it all apart.
Remember I said at the start this is not for the front of heart? Oh good.
Well you should have the throttle body pretty much disassemble now.
Do this for both throttle body's.
The main thing you need to do now is use the spindle from the 4b11 and put it in the 4g69 housing.
Make sure you put the spring back in. The preload on that is about half a turn.
Put the screw in the back of the spindle where we removed the Welsh plug.
Don't do it up too tight or it won't move freely.
Once it is in slide the 4g69 butterfly in and use some Loctite to hold both screws in.
Ok so now the fun bit of testing.
You can leave the stock 4G69 electric motor installed for the time being in the housing and drop in the 4b11 intermediate gear so now you will have the electric motor the intermediate gear and the Spindle all installed and the butterfly installed as well.
Glad you found this info.
