CE: Pod filter installation (issues)

Hey all,

I currently own a 2002 CE Lancer 1.8L.
I recently got a K&N pod filter with the necessary adaptors and installed it. As soon as i started the engine, it jerks through the low RPMs. Almost sounds like its about to stall.

I initially thought the MAF was messed up so i got another one from the wreckers but it's still having the same issue.

I also took out the pod filter and left the MAF connected to the engine and the car is still jercking.

There are no leaks or no hoses that aren't connected? Any ideas what ia wrong?

Have you reinstalled your stock filter box to make sure you didn't bump something during install?

Did you take your battery off? If you let it sit and idle for 15minutes it might sort it's *poo* out.

It will take awhile 5 minutes or more to settle down.
Idle usually starts high 1500rpm or so then lowers.

Why did you have to drill? Box comes out easy.

I had to drill as the bolts connecting the MAF to the box was a real *mum* to get out. Tried using long nose pliers and wise grips. But nothing worked.

Can confirm getting the MAF off the box is a biiiiitch of a job.

Can't see how having the pod on vs not would cause this, so I wouldn't bother with the stock setup just yet.

How long did you let it run for? Tried revving it a bit?

*Disclaimer not a mechanic or even that knowlegable about anything just some suggestions.

*Update*
Mechanic has said that the ECU is fried up and it needs to be replaced. But due to a stupid laserline immobiliser it can't be replaced with any old ecu. Going to bring it to a ECU specialist to try and get it fixed.

Any idea how installing the pod filter could cause this?

very unlikely the ECU is "Fried" from installing a pod filter. get a second opinion.

Hey, i have driven it for a couple of days and it still does the same. Still having the issue.

I too have the exact same model lancer, and OMG !!! how hard was it to get those bolts off the stock setup, I know exactly what you mean.
But this is just a suggestion, Im far from a professional in this department, everything I know or have learnt has been from first hand trail and errors and a lot of money spent and wasted hahah.
But by any chance have you tried playing with the IDLE control (I think that's what the term would be for it is) underneath your throttle body youll see the Idle speed sensor, there will be a screw there that you can rotate and adjust accordingly, youll need a flat head screw driver to do so. I apologise if I have stated the obvious, but I thought Id throw in my bit for ya. good luck !!

So who installed the pod filter, you or your "mechanic"?

If it was you, what did you touch while you were doing it?

Also upload some photos so we can see how the install has been done.

agreed, need pictures and info of what you touched to help diagnose

He said it was jumping around not idling too high or low. Adjusting this would cause them to jump around at a different range

Hey all, I have fitted the factory air box back and it's still having the issue. Was wondering if it could be the O2 Sensors? It sounds like its running lean.
Can't post the pics as they are too big to upload
