Budget brake upgrade ... anyone done this?

Hi everyone, I'm Charles and am new here.

I have just got myself a 2003 CE Mirage. The intention is to turn it into a budget track day car. The car is basically standard with the optional 14" alloy wheels.

I have installed a set of BC Racing coil overs so that ticks off suspension.

I am now looking at a budget brake upgrade from the standard 236 dia rotors to the 256 dia rotors. I don't want to go to the 276 dia rotors just yet because that would mean getting 15" wheels and tyres. I came across this youtube video
I have looked at other forum posts and they haven't listed (as far as I can see) this option of callipers, bracket & rotors from a 2004-2008 CH ES Lancer that bolt straight up.

My question is, has anyone else done this? I'd like to swap out the calliper & bracket and get new slotted rotors and new pads. It seems to me that Lancer parts will be a bit easier to come by than the Proton ones listed in other threads.

Any advice or share of your experience is appreciated.

Cheers

Hey mate, a few things to mention on this

4x100 CH’s are rare. Only very early 2004 models have 4x100. The CG lancer were around with the same brakes and there are a few of those still around. 4x100 ch’s are more common in NZ, they even got 1.3L powered CH’s over there. Weird *poo*.

256mm discs are reaallyy not that much better for the money you’re going to invest. If you plan to upgrade at any point in the future may aswell make the change once.

14” is a crappy size for tyres

15” wheels will give you a much better selection of tyre sizes and brands/models with way better prices.

Have you had a look at this yet? Brake thread
Looks like there is no info on CH/CH 4x100 yet
It also looks like the same pads are used on the 256 and 276 discs.

Also to note for street driving a 4g15, stock brakes are okay - some better pads and discs will go a long way.

Hi SDate42

Thanks for your response, really helpful. I've read through the suggested brake thread and am slowly understanding what it all means.

I wasn't aware of the CH 4x100 parts availability and the 14" tyre choice situation.

It looks like 15" wheels and jumping straight to the 276 dia rotors are the way to go.

Perhaps new discs and pads in the interim.

Thanks again for the info.

Cheers

Second what Sdate said, 15 is pretty well your best future proof option. Having been in a mirage with standard 276mm rotors and semi okay pads, can confirm it stops on a dime. Kind of wish I had gone that route instead of the 294's because now I'm stuck with 16's and a fairly limited tyre selection.

Protons are still kicking around the wreckers if you bide your time and get in quick, however FTO's have been a bit more common recently and offer the ability to run 5x114.3 should you decide to.

Running a bigger brake booster setup is highly recommended once you get up to 276 as it promotes a nice brake feel, more stopping power and no 'spongey' feeling you will get from the standard CE setup :)
