4G15 DOHC

Hi Guys,

I have a question for those of you who have done some of this before.
I would love to eventually do a DOHC swap on my 1.5L SOHC.
I have a few questions however.
Was there a 4G15 DOHC engine released in australia?
I know rpw do a conversion kit..
If not is there another engine that I can get one off and swap?
Am happy to buy in an import if I know what I'm looking for.
If so what engine should I keep my eye out for..
The next questions would be what else do I need to change at the same time.
Reason I'm asking all this is so that I can plan and work out what I can or can't afford and what I can do now without having to redo later.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks..

I think you work out better off just slapping a 1.8l in. Also some hyundai engines slap straight in iirc

Hyundai have a few engine choices, they will fit but might need to throw an after market engine managment in, unless you know a good auto electrician who will splice both looms together

G4FK DOHC 1.5 (Excel) 74kw
G4EK SOHC TURBO 1.5 (S Coupe) 85kw
G4GM DOHC 1.8 (Lantra) 94kw
G4GF DOHC 2.0 (Coupe) 102kw

for info on the 4g15 dohc setup
clickity-clack this link

it will cost ALOT, and will only give u maybe 15hp max (in combo with other mods)
no, there were no 4g15dohc's sold in aus (except for the new colt which is way different, and myabe the cyborg if it was sold here)

you can import the whole motor from "import monster" for around $1300-$1500, then u would have to fitt it all off
here is one for sale on import monster (dont be fooled by the price it says, its really alot more to import)

its very expencive, probably not worth it in the long run when u can pick up a 1.8L engine (4g93) that will bolt right in with loom gearbox and all for $800-$900 from ur local wreckers
getting a 4g93 will give u a bit more as if u did the dohc conversion, it is a longer job

if ur really in love with ur 4g15 then go for it, otherwise go for an engine swap

engine swap like res said. you arent going to get that much more power outta ur 1.5. 1.8's have got quite abit more zip in them then the 1.5's.

i think the dohc conversion would be worth while if i costed ~$700-800 mark imported

this will be something i am going to look into b4 i do my conversion, see if i can buy the whole engine from import monster and get someone over there to take the parts off it i need so the postage isnt soo bloody much

cos really the parts needed for the dohc arnt that large and weigh alot less than a whole engine so you would expect import costs and post to be ALOT cheaper (theoretically) but then u have to pay someone to take the parts off it...

Go hyundai engine res, only because I havn't seen any do it yet :)

why would i convert to a hundai engine when its harder than a mitsu conversion? might aswell go 93/4
thats not very logical

but if i found a way to get g15 dohc stuff for cheap (under $800) i'd do that instead of converting

valid point but it would be different lol. And I just assumed that being a hyundai the parts would be fairly cheap lol

I can't wait to see guys buy CJs and do all this stuff to them... Will be a great way to spend an afternoon reading!

i have a 4g15 dohc and unless your like me and love your car more than money i wouldnt bother.the dohc conversion by itself isnt that good, you need further mods to enhance its full potential.spend about $1200 on extractors and full exhaust system and then you'll have more power than a stock 1.8.thats about $3000 all up so far.
i have a 1.8 mr lancer with no mods and its great to drive.

in my opinion get a mr lancer because it has a 1.8 litre, factory bodykit, electric windows etc.

how much extra power can you achieve with a full zorst and headers?

I am doubtful you can get more than 5-10%... I spent up massively on my full exhaust and even more on improving induction and did not achieve more than 10%. Maybe you found the magic formula!

Either that or 1.8 has little more power but only more torque...

@tryg, i think its easy to improve on the 4g15's power figure just cos at stock they are so crap

like the 12v head, u can feel how bad it flows at high rpm stock is so bad, chocked power as, headers/extractors frees up heaps of that chocked top end
so i can immagine the dohc would improve upon that high end a whole bunch too, sure maybe not worth the cost tho

i would say with extractors, intake TB and LW underdrive i would be almost sitting at a stock 1.8s power, maybe a bit less and thats on sohc, so i imagine dohc would pop u up at the 1.8L power level with those mods pretty easily.... then turbo and ur looking at 140hp i think on a decent boosting
which is nothing to be sneezed at, thats one of my possible goals 4g15T dohc i would be heaps happy even if it was $7K later, build a fuel efficient-ish beast of a tiny engine
