1.8 CC lancer dead

Yesterday I was on my way to work and I was 2 mins into the drive when my car started to run *poo* and kind of jolt as it was running really bad I pulled over to check to see if I could find the problem and then the car died and wouldn't start. Eventually I started it (just) by excelerating and trying to start it and it was really really rough so I revved it up a bit (took ages to climb RPM) and was running bad the whole time and then idled for a bit until it died again.
So I got a mechanic to have a quick look at it to see if he could see what was wrong with it before I got a tow home. The mechanic listened and looked at the engine while I was trying to start it and could only come to the conclusion that the timing belt may have jumped a couple of teeth and it is out of time now. It sounds like it wants to start but just won't and if it does it doesn't run for long before cutting out again. Either way I need to put a new timing belt kit on because it is due but I am almost certain that it's not the timing belt because just this afternoon the car started like normal and revved like normal? Could it be more the spark plug/ leads side of it??Any ideas anyone?? Any help is mostly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Sounds similar to the problem my maxima had. Check the throttle body and give a good clean. The iacv stuffed up on my car and it wasnt worth fixing it so I sold it.

Its not your timing belt lol

The mechanic wants you to give him your $$

I recken its the distributer/points, if its not the pints then its the ECU or fuel pump

If it was the timing belt you'd know. Also I don't think it can 'jump' teeth without the whole belt jumping the same amount too because of how taught it is, then it would still be in the same position it was before it 'jumped'.

If the timing belt jumped or skipped a tooth, the car would still drive but will shake and depending on how many teeth you'd even hear a knock noise from your valves smackin on the pistons

I'm gonna say fuel pump is highly likely.

Get a pressure gauge on the rail and see what your fuel pressure is like.

To me it sounds like it might be fuel injectors (blocked) because if its cranking for long periods without firing and then running rough when it is running it sounds like it could be bad injectors... i might be wrong though (just my opinion)...
