Weird Cluster Problem

Hi Guys,
The other day i put a tacho cluster in my 99 model mirage all went in no problem, I had to hook in from the blue connection in the engine bay because pin 58 on the ecu did not work even though I had a spare ecu plug pin and fitted it all in perfectly but no biggy.
The problem is when the tacho is conected to the blue connector every time i pull up at say traffic lights or at home the revs die like down to 400 rpm but within five seconds they climb back up to normal. I reset the ecu let it idle for 15 minutes turn it off and back on revs normal but as soon as I drive off and pull up some where its starts doing it again.
So today I disconnected to tacho wire from the blue connector and reset my ecu (I was also changing my fuel sender which fixed my irractic guage problem) and now no problem at all back to normal.
Has any one had this problem before? Why would the tacho connection cause this idling/revs problem?
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers.

Have heard this before and I know there is already a thread some on here for it, with it answered.

I know someone else was having this problem, may have even been Tron. Think he had his tacho cluster hooked to the engine bay and it caused it to display half the revs. I have mine plugged into the ECU using Pin 58 with a spare ecu pin. Works perfectly, if you aren't getting a reading, the Earth on the back of the cluster could be wrong.

Check this thread for good info: http://www.auslancer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=811&p=44102&hilit=tacho+install#p44102

Thanks guys ill do a search, my pin 58 did nothing and the wire colours are different to any pictures or diagrams i could find, even the blue plug in the engine bay only has one white wire and all the pictures I've seen have to wires one white and one white black. ill have to keep searching.

My cluster works ( sort ) on the blue plug in the engine bay but i don't thinks its reading right plus my car keeps nearly stalling everytime i pull up and when i unplug it it idle fine, weird.
So i was thinking of trying pin 31 or 89 as I've read else where this also works .has any one else used these pins?

Can anyone confirm if the have used pin 31 on a mirage or 1.5 coupe I'm gonna try it of the next day or two and would like to know if anyone's had any success with that connection . cheers

Mate if you use a 1.8 tacho in a late model car it is possibly requried to depin the tacho signal pin at the back of the cluster on the interior loom connector.
Otherwise you could be doubling up on 2 different signals going into the same input.

Use pin 58 and depin the tacho wire if it exists. It will not work with 1.8 tacho and evo clusters.

Thanks Henry i will check loom connection at back of cluster tomorrow to make sure I'm not doubling up. just to clarify are you saying the 1.8 & evo cluster won't work if its a double connection or are you saying the they won't work at all on a 1.5?
Thanks i really appreciate your help.

Ok so i checked for existing pins/wiring for the tach and there was not the slots for tach and tach earth are empty. so i rechecked my earth and wiring to back of tach all good. so i put an ecu pin in the pin 58 on the ecu and nothing. I'm stumped.

I am saying if you send two different signals to the same input you are going to have a problem.
Later model Mirages may have the wiring already in the existing interior loom. So if you use a clusters out of a Lancer or Mirage VRX with tacho then it will not need additional wiring.
Additional wiring on the connectors would be the tacho ground and tacho signal as I can remember.

I have installed plenty of 1.8 clusters as well as EVO4-6 clusters on 4g15 powered Lancer/Mirages. Never has been a problem.
Send the car to someone who can troubleshoot the issue and fix it or try another cluster unit
It could even be that you read the ecu connector pin order the wrong way.

Thanks Henry i might have to get it checked out. I've triple checked the pin out to make sure i have it right. as a side note i just used the led test light on the blue connector in the engine bay and had a pulse no problem, but its no good to me due to the funny idol problem it causes, but when i tested 58 there is no reading on the test light at all. I did notice how you said later models are wired up for other things though eg all the power windows is up under the dash all pluged cluster up right behind where the control switch would be .

Thanks Henry might have to get something done its doing my head in. Ill figure out when I'm up your way next and might see if i can tee something up. cheers.

My car has the same problem no signal from ecu and the blue plug doesn't work at all... It's earthed properly as well and hooked up perfect to the back of the cluster... Had it working with my old 4g15 and now doesn't wanna work with the 4g93 any ideas guys cause I'm really puzzled

Yep me too, Nothing from pin 58, blue connector/white wire in the engine bay has nothing either :(

Yeah mine did to but it made the car idle funny, i never solved this issue before i sold the car i spent may hours under the dash though it really *poo* me tbh. The main problem i had was getting a ecu pinout diagram that matched exactly because on closer inspection they where all different to my ecu .

Yeah i spent hours trying to figure it out last night, and a while this morning trying again and putting the car back together. I am so stumped, i have tried everything i can find, and i have had no luck at all. Hopefully the auto electrician can find it
