Temperature Gauge

Was wondering what everyones temperature gauge runs on during normal driving? As on the drive to work this morning mine stayed on the 3rd bar only (non-tacho dash) the whole way (over 1 hour drive) , i'm sure it never sat that low before.

The evo bonnet obviously makes it run a little cooler but only on the 3rd bar seems a little low. I was thinking it should be a little under half.

if you're concerned (wouldn't be a big problem, running too cold = other than poor fuel economy), check the operation of the thermostat off the car...or just change it for a winter thermostat.

(Yes kiddies, you can buy a winter and a summer thermostat.. obviously more useful in Europe etc..)

Cheers thanks for the reply, i'll have to check my gregory's when i get home! How hard are they to get too, i'm guessing i'll have to change/drain the coolant?

not usually... some may spill, but the thermostats are usually toward the top of the engine/head...

just make sure the mating surfaces are dry if you have to use a paper gasket (so you can use sealant), but usually they use a rubber compression gasket around the thermostat, these days..

mine sits at just under half way on the tacho cluster, so yours sounds like somethings wrong

Nope my intercooler was just too big and after 4 hot laps temps were creeping up to around 110

NA now so once i get it running again i shouldn't have issues

how can that equate to the OP, which was talking about daily driving... Royzie, stop sensationalising!!

Bit of an update on the drive home the temperature gauge was back to normal just under half ( it didn't fluctuate at all). Dunno what the deal was this morning will suss it out tomorrow morning.

^ what he said!

Hence why I said test it off the car, in a pot of near boiling water (with a cooking thermometer).

Yep I understand, was just wondering if it's something that will get progressively worse over time? Or should I just wait till it karks it then replace it.

take warning signs as a chance to fix things when it's in your favour... or you might invariably wait too long and the car stops, when you need it to go!

My 2c

Yeh good point, I'll take a look when I get the chance!

I live in a pretty cold place but after like 20 minutes or maybe less of driving my temperature gauge is always just under half way. I've never seen it go any higher than that.

probably because your thermostat is doing it's job! In fact, it wouldn't matter if you lived in the Arctic Circle and it was 10deg below... the thermostat is there to ensure your engine operates in a thin band of temperature...

Here endeth the lesson.

just remember that the thermo works as in an off shut off position when the engine is cold to allow sufficient warming of the engine / and so on. if this thermo is not working as it should , the engine / temp gauge will show a low reading for a longer period until engine temps get to normal. for the low costs of a new thermostat you should replace it . my previous pajero auto was a pain in winter as the engine took so long to get to correct opperating temps for overdrive gears to function , new thermos all was fine.
