steering wheel controls - a clarification

So guys, looking to get my steering wheel controls working again. The car uses a different resistance to indicate a button press etc.

So am I right in thinking all we need is to interpret that and feed it to the head unit in a manner it understands.

So just get that connect the steering wheel control wire + power + ground + tune it?

Pretty pointless thread, im just clarifying before I buy one

Mate, they make a SWI-PAC and SWI-JAC, depending on which type you need...correct?!

I bought one that corresponded to my Kenwood and wired as per instructions... then did the little programming session, instant success.

Is that what you needed>!?

didn't see this response,

yeah I was just making sure I wasn't missing the point basically. As far as I could tell the only differences were the signal output, the swi-jac used proprietary 3.5mm plug that the clarions(and a few others) take. Still waiting for it to arrive.

sorry to hijack ur threat knk, but i was just wanting ot know if i was to say put a new cj wheel on my ce is there a way i could have the audio controls work through my hu? is it just wiring to the hu or is it a different wiring loom needed?

Good question, I'm not sure if the signals go direct from the buttons to the head unit in a CJ or whether it's via the CAN-bus...

Assuming its direct lines to the head unit you would just need a SWI-JACK or SWI-PS converter to interface it with a aftermarket deck.

So by that all I would need is the appropriate controls for said hu. And it shouldn't matter with the steering wheel

Yeah if there are direct wires from the buttons at the base of the steering wheel, then you should just need the PAC converter. But I cant say if this is the case as I've never looked into how the CJ handles getting the signal from the wheel to the head deck.

i dont think fitting the cj wheel to a ce would work. the ces horn button operates on a disk of course and i was under the impression the cjs one would be similar except with either a second disk or with the horn button operating with the resistance controller thingy? so to get the new wheel and horn working youd need 2 discs and a second prong mounted coming out behind the wheel for the steering wheel buttons?

Bad explanation but I hope you see what Im getting at.

and.....can the wheel simply run wires off of it? wouldnt they just tangle up and end up stuffed?.

There would have to be a clock spring too for the CJ's wheel. The question is whether the buttons come via their own wires through the clock spring or whether all the controls on the wheel are digitized onto CAN-bus then go through the clock spring. I would think its the first option but you never know with knew cars they absolutely love CAN-bus.

The addition of those buttons is into a common connector, even in the ES (pov pack) models. All those features go via the CAN-Bus, and yes..any additional wires would foul up.
