Spotlights on High Beam Not Working ?

Hey,
I have a 2002 Ce Lancer GLI and the spotlights dont work on high beam. Ever since ive brought the car they havent worked on high beam, but one night they did, but since then they havent ? I dont know alot about cars but i have checked the wiring and it all seems ok, and the relay seems fine too. Im not sure why they never worked on high beam, then they did for one night, then they havent worked since then. There is a switch that does high and low beam for the spotlights aswell and it doesnt change the light at all. Any help will be great thanks as im new to this forum.

Are they foglights? not spotlights, and therefore not wired into the high beam but through a separate switch?

actaully they could be fog lights, i thought they were but the person i got the car off said they were spotlights ? And they are wired through a different switch, a low and high beam switch ? If you know what that means ?

Yeas they are mounted low on the front bar, but the switch installed in my car doesnt look like that, it looks like just an ordianary type of switch, like the type of switch you buy from *Richard* smith lol ? Would it still be foglights ?

Seeing that you have a GLI, and that they didnt come with foglights. Im guessing that would be your switch.

Did you turn the switch on yet?

Yea i have turned the switch on numerous times and nothing changes. Ever since i have had the car (since Febuary 2010) it has only ever worked once, and that was about 4 months ago ? I have checked to see if there was current running through the switch and there is ? I have no idea whats going on.

as its a DIY job its hard to say how its wired up, does it turn on if you have your headlights on and then turn the switch? is there a relay thats broken? im hoping theres a fuse on the circuit, have you checked that? are the bulbs in the foglights broken?

Are these questions, or are you telling me this is whats happening and punctuated wrong?

Follow the wires through you engine bay and check for loose connections.

You havent given much detail to go on, or provided any pictures. It would be a great help. Throw up an introduction thread.

I got told there should be a fuse on the circuit but im usure where it would be ? and the relay works fine and the bulbs are fine too.

And i was just telling you what ive done.

When i get some pics i will upload them. And what is an introduction thread ? lol

Have you tried this^^^

Ok, well if all the physical devices are working as they should, then you just left with wiring and solid connections. Follow the wires through the engine bay/dash and see where they go.

The fuse can be in the fusebox, built into the relay, inline in a fuse holder etc, depends where the wiring goes.

Introduction thread = Introduce yourself to the forum, post a photo of your car, engine bay, interior etc. It helps people answer questions when they can see what there looking for.

Got some good news. It was a relay that was stopping my lights from working. And they are Low Beam - High Beam Spotlights. LOL Thanks everyone for the help :)

Re: Fog lights only works on high beam?

I have a similar issue, my fog light only work when i turn on my headlight to be high beam, could it be the relay also? Cause i told my mechanic about it, he told me it just how it wired, just need to get an auto electrician to rewire it so that it work when headlights turn on to both high and low beam.

p/s: sorry to hijack jakey_boi's post, but didn't see a point of open a new thread.

There will be a wire going from the relay to the headlight loom, cut/desolder/unwire this from the highbeam wire, wire it to the lowbeam wire.

Okay, found the wire connect to the high beams.

Just wondering if it will still work if i split the wire from the relay into two, and connect both on high and low beam wire?

Not sure how normally people do, just connect to low beam only?

Why split the wire, that wire only tells the lights when to come on, if you have it on the lowbeam, its on, when you turn to highbeam, the low beam is still on, and so the lights are still on, so having the wire connected to high beam still is useless.

But it will still work.

Or..... use a switch  run a wire to the cabin connect to a simple switch, that way they aren't always on, and you won't get fined for it!

The fog lights already have a different switch. Just changed the wire to the low beam, it work but only the driver side :( the passenger side could be burnt. Tomorrow will get a new bulb and see what happen.

After changed the wire, work when on low beam, it turn off when I change to high beam.

something is up with the wiring there?
check that the relay is wired up correctly, and sounds like there could be another issue with you actual headlight wiring if you loosing power on high beams.
prob best off removing it all and starting from scratch,

I tried connect the wire back to the high beam wire, still one fog light works, so suspect one of the fog light just burnt, will see if new bulb fix the problem. Will let you guys know. Thanks for the suggestion so far.
