Rough idle after WOT

When comparing diesel combustion to petrol combustion, keep in mind that diesels ignite under a Constant Pressure process (or can be examined using this model), not Constant Volume process which petrol combustion occurs.

With the same compression ratio, a petrol engine will be more efficient than a diesel.

Also, with the ease of ignition between octanes, its all relative to the activation energy required. A crude analogy,

Its easier to compress a sponge ball with your hands (compress 91 using the compression stroke)
than it is to compress a styrofoam ball with your hands (compress 98 using compression stroke)

however with the aid of hammer adding energy (spark plug igniting, adding enough energy to reach the activation energy) you can ignite both, with the same relative ease.

ANYWAY, i think fuel and octanes should be in a seperate thread.

Found it was my valve clearances that needed adjusting. Intake vavles are tight causing them to ride when up to running temperature.. Going to adjust them next weekend, so fingers crossed thats what the problem is!

Just so you guys know, 4g69 2.4 litre, the vavle clearances should be adjusted every 60,000kms.. Using a 20mm (intake) and 30mm(exhaust) feelers guages, get car warm. Remove rocker cover. Find TDC, adjust every cylinder thats a too of stroke, rotate engine 180 degrees, adjust all others..

Pretty simple really.

Sooo adjusting the valve clearances made my valve lash go away but it did not fix my idle problem. Starting to think maybe vacuum leak or even a sensor although we had my car on the scan tool with nothing showing up. More investigation is needed :(

Aw I missed this debate. No one used a crucial word: VOLATILITY

Aeroplane fuel is super high octane, which means it is not that volatile. You can put a match out with aeroplane fuel. The higher the octane the safer fuel is, as it is harder to ignite.

Anyway everyone else already made all the good points. Too late :(

United servo's do sell 100 octane, but its usually in a blend with up to 10% ethanol, which isnt ideal for certain cars.

possibly tps maybe playing up. mine is doing the same coughs when idling but still performs fine with no hicups

Ended up being a dirty connection.. Had car on scan tool at worklooking at parameters such as tps, afr and so on, everything was fine..
