noticed a rattling noise that seems to come from the drivers side drive shaft? i physically grabbed it and gave it a shake and it was loose-ish... im not sure how this is supposed to be. is there supposed to be any play in it? causes? does it have anything to do with bearings?

thoughts?

Which way did you shake it?
They are meant to have some play in the same direction of the shaft, to account for suspension movement.
If you can grab the shaft and move it toward the front and rear of the vehicle, or up and toward the ground, then the joint/s may be worn out.

Which bearings are you referring to?

When does the Rattling noise occur? when you hit a bump? when turning? when accelerating or braking? etc

shook it in every direction, to me it seemed to be excessive play. when i mentioned bearings it was just a blind guess... the rattling only occurs when hitting bumps in the road, sounds like its gonna fall off or something..

im mechanically minded, i know how to use tools so would it be worth replacing the joints myself or am i better off putting it into a mechanic workshop?

CV shafts are fairly straight forward to replace - if that is your issue.

Very hard to say with out seeing the vehicle, but if it only happens when you hit a bump, I'd be more inclined to say the strut mounts are needing replacement.
-CV's normally give an odd clicking/clunking sound when they are failing, an generally more prominent when turning.

If you are wanting to do the work your self, I'd at the very least suggest you get the car diagnosed by someone who can help you confirm what is wrong.
-Again, strut top mounts are fairly easy to replace as well.
