Coming up to second Capped service (have 5 free) and considering changing to full synthetic oil.
My personal mechanic of passed 26 years has suggested I don't switch over till I have covered at
least 5000ks, should be there by next service.
Was considering using Nulon which I have used in the passed, works fine and reasonable price,
or push up to Mobil one which is expensive but supposed to be the best, or should I continue using
Castrol but fully synthetic. Any suggestions?

I would hold off on the synthetic oil until 20k or 30k service but continue to use a good quality mineral based oil. Nulon make a good product that will work well but as to the best oil around mobile 1 was awesome 15 years ago but now oils produced by Penrite, Elf, Fuchs, nulon, and heaps of others are of the same or better quality.

Shell Helix Ultra is a top tier oil and is reasonably priced usually in the high $50 range, I've bought them on special for as low as $29, and recently at supercheap for $39.

It is factory fill at Ferrari, and is in the league (and arguably the best of) Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge.

I use this exclusively and my Verada is running better and better, now at 221,000km

Thanks frosty, would have thought the motor would be bedded in by 5,000ks, if right what is the reason for holding off till 20,000ks or 30,000ks.
I do a lot of short hops, interspersed with with longer runs of say 30ks to 50ks or more on country roads, all short runs, outer suburban, no stop start, so want to get onto synthetic
as soon as possible, as it handles sludge and cleanliness much better. Notice semi synthetic used by Mitsubishi tends to discolor fairly quickly. Have been told this is normal.
In my previous cars, using Nulon synthetic, the oil came out not much different to when it went in and even on my Skyline after 250,000ks, engine looked and ran, as good as new, no discoloration or sludge.Cant remember how soon after new that I started using full synthetic, dam it!
Note Spetz reply after I started this one. Ferrari from scratch! Would like to know what your speedo reading was when you first started using full synthetic Spetz.

Thanks Spetz, what was your speedo reading when you first started using full synthetic? Would imagine Ferrari bores etc would be fully polished and honed etc, prior to being put together. Ready to race!!
I understand that Mobile One uses a different technology to the others giving it advantages in some areas but dearer to produce. Nulon has served me well, so as they say. When your on a good thing stick to it!

We see some engines that go to synthetic oils too early tend to burn a bit of oil due to the rings not bedding in properly. This tends to be on performance engines like 5.7 and 6.0 v8s, that don't get driven hard wrxs are synthetic oil from factory and they need to be given plenty of load to wear in. Lot's of scubbies were being rebuilt under warranty for oil usage. My suggestion to wait won't be a problem for anyone if still using a high quality mineral oil for 20 to 30k.

I'll certainly take your advice on board but as car isn't using any oil now, and if using same viscosity synthetic oil. How can there be a difference? Could I have reached an acceptable point early.:confused2:

For the first 100,000km I am unsure what oil was used in the car. Whatever the dealership used.
From 100,000-170,000 Castrol Magnatec was used (not a good oil).
I then used Penrite HPR once, Castrol Edge once, and then moved onto Shell Helix and never looked back.
I felt Penrite was the worst and I think it is an overrated oil overall.
Castrol was ok, but Shell just made the car smoother and quieter.

Nothing scientific obviously, but my research supports that Shell oil is top tier and yet it does not really command a premium in price

The drama with synthetic oils is they are too good at lubricating and don't allow rings to settle in. I'm not saying oil usage will occur with every engine but why chance it.

I used initially Nulon 10W-40 in my CJ (when I had it) at about 7500kms and then did another few changes with it at 7500km intervals. Then I changed to Penrite HPR 5W-40 and stuck with that. The car was frequently driven hard once it was warmed up. When it was onsold at around 120,000km it was not using oil and the engine was running as good as new...

Next I had a SS ute and I changed it at about 5500km over to a synthetic oil. It got sold at about 50,000kms and didn't have any oil issues. I did drive that car a bit harder in the first couple thousand kms than I had driven the Lancer to make sure the rings bedded in well.
