Lancer MR Steering Wheel Removal

Hey all,

I have spent the last 3 hours trying to remove the steering wheel (SRS airbag model) from my ‘02 Lancer MR to no avail. I have read that you aren’t required to unbolt the two Torx head bolts on either side of the wheel but the thing will not come off no matter how hard I pull it. Has anyone got any pointers? Cheers

You heard incorrectly! you will want to disconnect the battery-negative terminal and ensure it is away from the terminal to not keep the system powered. I turn the key ON to drain most of the power from the system to prevent the airbag from going off by accident. undo both TORX bolts (T27) this will allow you to pull the airbag module out (Be careful to unclip the yellow cable carefully) showing the NUT (17mm if I remember right) undo it then wind it back on by hand about 2-3 threads and bash on either side of the steering wheel to loosen the wheel off the steering column. enjoy. Also, a black wire for the horn assembly will need to be undone.
