i have a 6/96 lancer 1.8l believe 4g93 with idle issue.. it has 155k on the clock all original..
when cold it idles at approx 1000 rpm was told it was ok by mechanic when it gets hot it used to sit at about 850 now it fluctuates from like 500 - 1500 sometimes 2000 rpm
on occasion the oil light will flicker aswell im led to believe that is caused by the idle problem. tonight it drove fine then stopped to get maccas then wouldn't idle at all just stall could rev it just wont idle
I have put a can of throttle body cleaner through it aswell as clean the air flow meter.

im stumped and have no idea and I need it fixed any suggestions??

thanks

Could be your stepper idle motor. If you can start the car and drive it fine, but the revs fall and you stall as soon as you come to a stop and don't rev it at all, that's your problem. If that sounded weird... try this way. If the car runs fine if you keep the revs up but dies if you don't that's your problem.

Also adjust your tps or check to make sure it's working
I know if the tps is out then the car would fluctuate revs from around 500 then to 1500 then drop to 500 and so on

ok so I can drive it while holding up the revs but as soon as I take foot off pedal it stalls.. tps? where is that located? I read about the idle air control valve could that be the problem and where is that? all part of the throttle body.
thanks

you know what the throttle cable looks like? the tps will be on the oposite side of the throttle body to where that ends the ISC or idle speed control is located under the throttle body throat

Yeah I see it I pulled if off and the tps is spring loaded. Seems ok how do you test it?? can I pull it off and clean it. How does it work with the coolant lines going to it??

What you described happening is the stepper idle motor screwing up. Replace it.
