How to Loosen Crackshaft Pulley Bolt

Whether you are doing an engine conversion, changing pulleys or changing any belts you will normally have to loosen this guy.

Lets discuss some methods that are available to the DIY'er.

When I did my DOHC conversion I tried the following methods (some are dangerous and not recommended) and they did not work. I ended up towing the vehicle to a workshop to use their high powered rattle guns.

-Activating brakes and gearbox and using a breaker bar = This resulted in too much stress on the engine mounts so I aborted before something gave way.

-Rattle gun and 100PSI from home spec compressor = No such luck

-Checking rotational directions, inserting breaker bar, and cranking the engine over = No such luck and aborted early, very ghetto and dangerous

-I looked at getting the 'power bar' which is a breaker bar that you hit with a hammer = rare and expensive here in WA

-A mates heavy duty 240V rattle gun = no luck

-Remove transmission and lock the flywheel/other side of crank = too much work

Just needs a belt of 50cal bullets hanging off it and a roof mount for your car.

Back on topic is there any other ways of loosening the bolt?

Park it on a hill, put it in reverse, or first gear, which ever is lower ratio.

Then put a long peice of pipe/RHS on your breaker bar, then jump and hang off it???

have you tried going to a gym.
i suggest a bigger rattle gun or breaker bar with pipe and a fat friend everyone has one of them.

Bar on the ground/soild piece of car frame and crank. I do this at work all the time and works everytime!
