Build date/Compliance plate discrepancy

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone got a huge difference in build date and compliance dates on their cars?
I've got a 2010 VRX Sportsback. My build date says dec 08 and compliance says aug 10, which is a big difference.

I bought the car in WA where all the paperwork calls it a 2010, but when I got the car here to SA (had to have a tier 2 ID check) it's now a 2008 because SA uses build date as the compliance date.

So right now I have no idea what on earth the car is. Has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? TIA

its a 2008 build, complied in 2010.

The build date is the factory build date, the compliance date is the date it was first registered.

This is why during jan/feb new car places have big sales, selling 2014 build cars, in 2015... you are essentially buying a 2014 model, already a "year old" instead of a 2015.

That's what I thought. As far as buying it from the dealer everything said 2010. The bit where it gets "stupid" is SA disregard what the compliance plate says and put down the build date as the compliance. What I can't work out is if it's an 08 model or 10.

it would be an 08.

the thing that sucks is you can buy an 11/09 build, that might not get shipped, and to dealers, blah blah until 06-07/09and buy it in 01/10.. its "2 years old" but really... its new, and probably the same as the current model.

In any case, I'm 99.9% sure yours is an 08 model, its when it was built, and thats what it is. When it was complied and registered is simply when the first purchaser too ownership of that model.

Ah build date is production date, compliance date is when it was complied, not registered that would be registration date for purposes of warranty start date to the first purchase of the vehicle. New model vehicles are built 6 month before that year date. Eg August 2008 is still classified as a 2009 model.

compliance date is the date that it passed ADR inspection. the build date is the time it rolled out of the factory in japan.

mine is build dec 94 comply feb 95

I'm still very confused. The warranty start date at first sale is August 2011.
The build date is dec 08.

At this point I'm ready to send it back to the dealer as it was sold as a 2010 and it's starting to be clear its not. Under consumer law the car is not as described and I'm entitled to a full refund.

Thanks for your input ;)

When I bought my first motorcycle it was a 2009 model, but it was registered as a 2008, I thought I got rorted so I rang the bike shop up. They told me the RTA uses the build date and not the compliance date, hence the discrepancy.

Why dont you ring them up and see what they say. December 2008, is pretty much 2009, so I could see it as being the correct model. For me it was easy, the graphics changed yearly so it was easy to recognise what model it was.

i can see why you be pissed you bought a car sold as a 2010 if you tried to sell it in SA as a 2010 you'd be done for false advertising as it's not registered as one. and because of this you now have an extra 2 years of value depreciation.

That exactly it. It affects the insurance too. I've got a mountain of paper work (vehicle history checks, previous state rego papers, Mitsubishi warranty etc) corresponding to the car which is different for the two states. I've called the WA transport authority, no answers, asked the SA transport authority and the vehicle inspectors, still no answer. The transport inspectors said it does happen with lots of imported cars but they've never seen the issue with a lancer before.

I sent the details to Mitsubishi for the drive belt recall and they call it a 2010. So after lots of sleuthing I've come full circle right back to where I started. At the very least it's being taken further with the selling dealer.

I do appreciate everyone's input.

All matching. The tier two check went over all engine, VIN and body numbers. They all match, it's the dates that are different.

You definitely have a 2008 MY09 (the model years are roughly aligned to the financial year with Mitsubishi) VRX. Not being complied until 2010 and then the warranty not starting until mid 2011 is odd, can only assume it was a dealer demo hence delayed warranty start? Why it took so long to be complied is another matter in itself? The hatches must have been slow selling in that shape, it's not normal at all for a car to be sitting around that long 9quite normal for motorcycles though).

You won't get a full refund this far down the track. No chance at all of that happening. Best you would get is the difference in value now between a 2008 and 2010. Even then not sure how much luck you would have going through your state's tribunal/small claims court.

I know now from the checks that is was a dealer demo and was sold new fairly cheaply.

I've only owned the car for 1 month so I'm still covered by consumer law and the 90 day sales warrenty.
Funnily the enough the dealer has stopped replying to phone calls and emails.

What did you pay for it and what are other 2008 VRXs being advertised for (in a similar condition and mileage)??

I've figured out that it is an 09 model.
I've found an equivalent model sold in February 2015 with the same kilometres sold for $9000. I paid $12000 (2010 price)

You've defiantly helped me to understand what on earth is going on. The vehicle history report makes a lot more sense now.

Glad I have helped somewhat.

Comparing car prices on paper is hard to do as there can be a huge variance in the quality of the car once you actually view it. You should certainly pursue the matter further with the dealer and Fair Trading, but if you are happy with the car I would push them to offer cash back as a remedy rather than returning the car.

Do you plan to keep the car for a long time? The reason i ask is because if you keep the car for a long time the difference between an 08 and 10 built car won't make a huge difference in a few years down the track, the condition and KMs will play more of a part in determining value. Because if your whinging to the dealer and Fair Trading gets you no where I personally would suck it up and not bother with the tribunal. You've got to put the time in to prepare yourself for the tribunal, time off work, etc and the result can vary depending on whether or not you get an idiot overseeing the case at the tribunal...

As much as it's been a pain, the car is great.
The main thing is making sure the dealer is discouraged from inaccurately describing a vehicle again.
