Automatic CE Lancer Shifter Problem

Hi Members,

hoping someone can help with a problem with my wife's CE lancer.

we removed the centre console & automatic gear shifter & surround,
put it back on, and now car wont go back into Park.

I have tried taking the shifter off,
but now it won't come off,
have I stripped the plastic on the inside of the shifter.

And if so, does anyone know how to get it off,
so we can have a look at the problem.

No idea sorry, unfortunately most people on here seem to have manual CEs, but hopefully someone might know....

Usually though most cars have a mechanism to stop you coming out of park without pushing the button in (or I know for CJs you have to have your foot on the brake), is there any chance that the mechanism was bumped/mucked up when you took the surround off and is what's stopping it getting back to park?
 
Yeah, that's why I want to take the shifter back off,
to see if anything under underneath has gotten stuck.

From previous cars this has normally not been too hard to do (Manuals are way easier),
but yeah just think I have stripped the inside of the mechanism since it wont come off now.
 
Have a look from under the car and see if the selector cable has caught or fouled on anything. Check the end of the cable where it goes to the gearbox, remove it from there and start again by adjusting it properly.

I read somewhere that the selector has to be in neutral for the shifter to be removed / installed?
