Advance or retard timing

when I was installing the timing belt which drove me crazy trying to get it 100% accurate which brings me to this question which is worse for irregular running retard or advance and how much is a safe amount.

Well it depends. Changing timing by a little bit can be good but if it's way off in either direction you'll probs run like *poo*. But I know people who are running like -5* and *poo* like that with no issues at all.

If the timing is retarded by a small amount you will notice a gain in torque the 'low' rpm range, advancing it will shift the power to the upper rpm range.
That being said, a tooth off on a timing belt is a fair amount, & would agree either direction will run poorly.

There is no such thing as a safe amount, all depends on how close pistons and valves get, generally you can dial things in with in a couple degrees with out trouble, although any sane person would make the adjustment and rotate by hand if in doubt.

Umm advancing timing brings LOW to MID torque down lower, it moves your power point forward at the expense of higher up power. Just play with the timing a degree at a time, i wouldn't bother retarding with a stock cam. Since we have a sohc you're literally advancing both intake and exhaust, look at the workshop manuals for where the cam opens and closes the valves. I've advanced my 93 cam in my 94 engine and it's definitely improved low to mid range power.

Bugger - I should of mentioned that this is a 4G69 not the 4G93.. and with the variable cam (mivec) there would be a difference in power...

But thanks for the info something to think on... it is just that while the engine is temporarily out of a car this is a good time to do changes etc...

question: is the g69 CVVT mivec or mivec with the 2 cam lobes or both? (being sohc i dunno how 2 lobes would work tho)
and if its the CVVT can u tune it when you tune the ecu to retard adv etc?

SOHC can't be cvvt as if you advance/retard it you can only do both at once. Because they work on oil pressure I'd suspect normal mivec. There's still nothing stopping you from advancing the 69, it'd still do roughly the same thing. Just probably think about it a little more and have a play it's only gonig to bring the power band forward or backward from the current point. have you got a link to an online workshop manual for it? I wouldn't mind taking a look myself, I have the 4G9 manual and that has been helpful.

I have a massive file for this engine etc it is over 300mb I do not think that this site will allow for such a big file if someone wants it I can email it to you,,

I had another look thru the manual and it says between 3 and 5* advance is not a bad thing (basiclly)
