4b11 turbo viability

I've been doing a bit of homework on turbo builds on the 4b11, and have seen some contrasting viewpoints, some info in viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1502
but nothing really solid.

Long story short, I've looked at certain other clubs data and found there to be not much, or FUD thrown about.
Before i could start getting bits and pieces together, or even consider the budget/time considerations I wanted a few opinions:

-safe boost levels (if any), if anyone has any data on 4b11 turbo builds on stock internals.
-part compatibility, my understanding is I can scrounge a lot of bits and pieces from the ralliart/evo, including turbo manifolds, possibly turbo itself, intercooler, piping, etc.

I haven't really ventured into this area of modding before, and there's work I'd need to do to suspension, brakes and other peripherals first I understand.

any resources, forum links, etc would be awesome. especially links from pages without an obvious agenda.

Seen as though the evo 10 motor is the 4b11, one would assume that stuff like turbo, exhaust manifold, and numerous stock evo 10 parts would fit the engine in your CJ?

sort of, has been the resounding data i've seen around.
One issue i've heard is that the stock evo turbo won't work comfortably with the low boost levels I'd need, and the ralliart turbo doesn't fit the evo x manifold.

piping also won't be quite the same, as the evo relocates the battery to the rear of the car, whilst the ralliart retains it in the awkward position its in.
I'd say I'd have more luck borrowing bits from the ralliart lancer as opposed to the evo at a glance.

yeah, very true. stripping down a ralliart lancer and imitating it's setup might be the easiest/cheapest way. only thing then would be figuring out a tune that wouldn't blow it up.
I'm hearing a lot of negative things about the n/a 4b11's abilities to handle boost in general though, fairly high failure rates.

Yeah ive heard the same. The evo and ralliart motors har a semi closed deck structure and use four bolt bearing caps which would make it quite alot more capable of handling boost than the n/a motor.. Im sure there are people out there that have had success with turbocharging this engine..

Details I've discovered mostly looking at the rrm kit and reading about figures they safely gained on stock internals.

Typically good for 7 psi without internals. Can expect about 147 kilowatts at the wheels.
Ralliart gear nearly all bolts straight up and is ideal as the turbo can be tuned for that boost more easily than the Evo turbo.
Adaptation to the exhaust to fit downpipes to stock exhaust, I believe some minor intake changes need to occur to get the Ralliart stuff to fit.
Ecu required and tuned to suit, can't just salvage the Ralliart ecu I dont believe.

Intercooler and piping nearly all fits up, and only other bits and pieces needed are oil lines and gauges.

It's a project I'll consider coming into next year, depending on if my pay increases or not haha

I hate to be the one saying "lol just get evo" but wouldn't just trading in for a ralliart be pretty much the same cost?

Well, it's more in the concept stages at the moment, but if I'm going to drop coin into my car doing the supporting mods regardless, what's spending 2k on Ralliart parts and 1.5k on ecu and tuning in the bigger picture.

And although I'll admit tc-sst is fast, I still think id prefer a real manual.

Plus if I sold my cj I'd prob get 10k for it. An extra 4-5k dropped into it wouldn't come close to 25k for a decent example of a Ralliart lancer.

Mod money is always wasted money but I fear I'll keep doing it anyway, this is all just a pipe dream at the moment anyway

Late post but you also need to remember you are getting better seats, better steering wheel, creature comforts like auto wipers.

Then on the powertrain front a stronger gearbox (can the CJ clutch take the extra power?), stronger engine, AWD system and the potential for a hell of a lot more than 147kW ATW!

If you do want to go DIY then I dont think many people have really bothered down that path so I'd make sure you budget atleast a couple grand more than you first expect as you'll likely have issues pop up along the way...

I agree, with the AC, rust new exhaust and CV joints alone I've probably spent more on my CC in the last year than its worth. And I still plan on dropping 1k more on suspension next year plus fix the rest of the paint. Still I could not stand to see the car sold off and neglected.

That said I would love to get my hands on a CJ, even an 2008 model and start work on that, if I could afford to.

Speak to Angeal here in Melbourne...

Some basic info with boosted NA is if you do run stock internals dont run any more than 7pounds. Yes they can head upwards of 12 and higher but they get unstable. The stable and safe limit was set at 7. Keep it simple for the masses that is what RRM did. RRM put out a kit favoured safety.

Forged internals allows you to go higher but keep in mind your working with a FWD platform and you dont need to be pushing for the AWD outputs. If you work in drivetrain loss you can have a more sensible build. Using a combo of RA and Optima Turbo/Genesis Turbo parts can help you out. The three share much in common, especially if your a CVT owner the Optima Turbo will be of much help to you.

The info is out there its just all over the place.

I know 2 people running stock 4b11 motors with 12psi of boost. 2 years and still running.

Its upto the tuner and motor i guess.

I was the 3rd one. lasted 30 seconds lol

Low boost like 6-8psi is good! can expect 120-130 kws atw. For a manual! CVT, dont even bother. gearbox goes boom at like 3-4psi .

why did it last 30 second denzza i never knew the full story but knew you just came off the dyno and it went kaboom on the freeway or something.
