EDIT: this is just what I've done so far, luckily nothing permanent. While the legality remains questionable, this is something I'd like to acheive to some degree of a standard.

As the title suggests, this is a DIY on how to turn your indicators into drl's like many euro cars have from factory.
Got inspired to do this by the old e38 BMW 7 series, it looks bad ass with these.
So, what you'll need:
- Wire Cutters
- Wire strippers
- terminal Connectors (any kind will do, or alternatively solder + heat shrink)
- Phillips head screw driver
- Two stop tail bulbs (21w/5w)
- Two stop tail bulb holders (I got the whole rear tail light loom + bulbs from a rage at the wreckers for $5 but you can use any stop tail holder so long as you can get it to fit your existing bulb socket)
- And about 30 minutes

So what you'll be doing is replacing the indicator bulb holder with the stop tail one and using the existing indicator circuit to power the 21w filament and tapping the normal parkers circuit to power the 5w filament. This way, they will glow orange when you put the parkers on, and still be full indicator brightness when you wish to indicate. Nice

So step one, removing the screw that holds the indicator in and popping the whole thing out. Twist the bulb holder out and move the casing out of the way. I recommend doing the drivers side first as there is much more room for cutting and stripping the wires you need to get to so that when you get to the crammed passengers side, you already have some idea of what to do. I didn't...

Now cut off the existing bulb with the cutters and leave yourself a bit of wire length to join with. Connect up the new holder, with the 21w wire connected to to the original indicator circuit. Probably a good time to test stuff still works.

This bit is a little fiddly, but simple enough. Find a way to tap into the green wire of the parkers circuit, I used another terminal connector and just doubled up with my new wire on one side. Pull your newly added wire through to the bulb holder and cut to length

Join your new wire to the empty terminal. Tuck wires away. Put indicator back in. Repeat on other side.
And you're done :D

Not illegal? Even asked in at the local station this arvo?? The plastic terminals are temporary before soldering.. :|

Re: DIY - Indicators as Daytime Running Lights

where to start?

well yes, this is illegal,
this is stupid,
they are not daytime running lights, they are meant to be WHITE and only running when ignition on but headlights off not to mention some late model vehicles dim the DRL when indicating,
the wiring joiners you used have a purpose, this is not it! solder and heatshrink please...
you need to consider the fact you are now putting an extra 10w of power draw on the parker circuit, umm not overly dramatic but still I bet you haven't changed the fuse to reflect this?

well... everything?

I dunno how the police operate in nsw but generally you can ask a number of cops something and get a different answer from each one... look up what the rwc requirements are for DRL and while you're at it for factory indicators and you will see it's wrong. My advice would be undo what you have done and invest in some proper DRL's and wire them properly... or try use your parkers as DRL or something similar but still they need to be wired and colored appropriately.

My parkers come on when the ignition does, I assumed this was normal? Seen plenty of beemers with the indicators glowing dully, as mine now do, from factory. Regardless, I apologise for this mess, just something I thought I might share.. Ugh what a *poo* day aha

So if you indicate, will they light up brighter like brake lights?

A video of this would be nice.

Just realised that the photos make them look super bright.. They're really not, all the photos have headlights off just the parkers on aha

Farking sick mod if it was legal. Could always install a small t10 into the parker housing and use that as a DRL, a white bulb of course. And just leave the indicators stock to avoid popo hassle.

Did this to my indicators a while back. Looks nice and no popo hassle.

I saw how you did them and was thoroughly tempted to do it the way you did, but decided I wanted something a little less permanent and wasn't so keen on having to dye the lense or put a film over it (requires a level of finesse my hands don't quite have lol)

This is actually pretty wicked haha... Amber glows are amazing!

Yeah, I love the amber glow

I have locked the topic to prevent further mess. SDate42 you can still edit your first post.

Whilst I personally don’t mind this sort of thing, it is unfortunately illegal in this case due to a couple reasons.
1) DRLs must meet a certain number of ADR rulings, most relevant to this is that they turn off when indicating (look at ANY euro car and you’ll see the DRL on that side of the car turns off)
2) DRL must be white, face forward, and be of a certain running length, and a certain distance from each other, ground, and distinguishable from other light when on.
Well done on doing something that no one else has done before
