turbocharged 4g93 on p plates?

hey! just wondering if it’s possible to put an aftermarket turbo on my 4g93 and for it to be legal for my p plates? thanks!

Don’t know what state you’re in, but I can safely say no.

NSW, where I’m from will not allow a p-plater to drive a car with a performance modification requiring certification. A turbocharger install on anything that came out in Australia with a 4G93 will count as such.

if you want to do it - you can but be sensible. No loud exhaust, no flutter, no stupid wheels, no stupid low, no spoilers, no decals, no bodykits. You need to be under the radar. Any of these things will draw attention to yourself, and once youre pulled over for one thing, you’ll be done for everything.

i’m in nsw as well, i’ve already got a catback on it but it isn’t stupidly loud, it is kinda low but nothing else major, what would happen if i got caught with the turbo?

Fitting a turbocharger is a “significant modification” and it requires certification in NSW. All p platers are prohibited from driving vehicles that have certification of modification.

Frosty is right too, your insurance is out the window. This is not just your own car, but any cars, buildings, infrastructure or people you cause damage to in the event of an accident. You could be totally liable for those costs if your insurer finds the turbo the be a cause of an accident youre involved in.

short and long. It’s illegal. It can be done.

@gdub367 story time :) It can be done, you might have the issue of kinda being scared to drive a turbo car on your P plated (if it’s modified), you might see a police or highway patrol car and start questioning things
Also being pulled over is Scary as all *fudge*, especially when they check under the rear at the exhaust and all 4 tyres.
Both are correct, insurance is ridiculously expensive and almost not worth it. It sometimes becomes a “chore” to carefully
drive a turbo lancer on your P plates

@SDate42 is correct, I have for the most part ran my car with a stock evo intake, (so no flutter atm) no BOV, 2 mufflers, cat converter and drive it like a stock 1.5l. (My lancer was originally that before I 4g93t swapped it) then give it some stick here and there, (but be very careful of this) I have no body kits, (stock mr kit technically) and the only stickers on the car is the auslancer.com one, and it looks stock AF, excluding the intercooler on the front
not have the car to low and scrapping is also a very good idea,
(track days are different, car is loud AF for those)

I speak from experience, 3 years on my P plates driving a turbo swapped lancer
Having a turbo lancer on P plates, for me Atleast was fun to race other people, but that’s about it, I still *poo* myself when a HP or police are near. Don’t get me started when I’m either behind one, or in front, that’s next level scary as *fudge*

i already get scared when i pass highway patrol ahaha, i’ve only got a catback, cold air intake and an aftermarket momo steering wheel, police are scary, maybe the turbo isn’t worth it until i’m off my p’s ahaha

It depends if you think it’s worth the risk
Still on my P plates now even after 3 years I still get scared lmao, even if I drive normally, guessing because they have the power to defect the car if they want
Now normal police are doing bonnet pops if they believe it’s defective, Atleast it’s in VIC

getting caught will end up with a. Loss of licence and suspension (for a year maybe)
Car will be defected and possibly crushed if your hooning in it
And probably never be able to register that car again,

you can do it (like in my case) but you need to keep the car stock af
