Strange loss of power, intermittent problem.

Well I've had my car for nearly 4yrs and its been pretty much problem free til now. I was recently coming up a long hill and the car stuggles to climb it, I changed down gear 4th and then 3rd and she wont accelerate and wont continue reving, sits about 4-5000rpm, and slowly I loose momentum. I took it to my mechanic and he checked fuel pressure, leads, plugs, fuel filter ( was a bit dirty so changed it), timing, no fault codes. Anyway I drove it some days later thinking all was good when I ran into the same problem again.. Just as before and after the long slope I was on a long straight and the car I could feel was labouring slightly so I stopped, noticed the idle dropped suddenly a couple of times and then I switched her off.
I made a phone call for a couple of mins and then restarted the car, turned around and nailed it, no probs at all, she drove smooth and quickly got up to speed, I pushed it hard up hills but everything was normal. Told my mechanic and he's not sure what could be causing the problem, yet to take it back. I only buy premium fuel from BP as well, and its the 4g15 powered ce lancer.

Anyone had such a problem before or any ideas people?

all 4g15's have trouble with hills yours sounds pretty bad tho
next time drop it 2 gears back straight away, thats what i do, 1 gear back in 4g15s going up a hill is kinda useless cos while u shift back you have already lost the momentum and the gear just shifter back to is now out of power band

the idle dropping sounds like the throttle position sensor or the idle speed controller frtizing, i know both of them have died twice on my 4g15 with the same idle symptoms

thanks for suggestions so far, I know my car very well, and I know that the 4g15 is a little lacking in the power department but this is not normal at all. I put in a new RPM performance clutch a few months back but its not clutch slip or binding etc Im pretty good at diagnosing probs but this ones got me stumped. Im thinking a sensor is stuffing me around possibly.

just saying it sounds a little like a diesil going up a hill lol

a low powered diesel my patrol powers up hills no probs.

also i agree with res. could be throttle position sensor

ok throttle pos sensor, I'll put it forward to my mechanic mate and see what he thinks... I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new one, duno what they're worth though....
