Stock airbox extra intake pipe?

There's a post over on evolutionm with the pics gone and reference link search feature dead

saying an extra intake pipe on a stock airbox is a decent mod and maybe even better than CAI and SRI + being cheaper (after changing battery). Just wondering if anyone has done something similar/knows somewhere on the web where this is still alive.

What model lancer do you have?
Im not 100% sure this is what he was talking about on the EvoM forums but its pretty common for those who want to keep their stock intake box / panel filter to do this mod.
The intake which goes into the air box has a pipe which loops around and goes down, so some people just rip out that section of the intake pipe and just replaced it with a more direct pipe to minimize restrictions.
Some people run the new pipe down near the tyre and other use the existing foglight hole in the front bumper.

Just got an 06 VR-X.

Stock intake:

I've seen cold air / short ram combo like this:

Or run further down to the spotlight/bumper like you said but not extra intake leading in to the stock box.

After I posted I saw a guy on YouTube just drill holes in the front of the box before the filter on another car. Easy enough but am hoping to keep the air cool. Might get another box from the wreckers if they're not too expensive and just go crazy with the drill.

What theyre talking about on EvoM is pulling the front snorkel that goes over the radiator off and routing your own pipe to the front bumper area. This may may a difference, may not, but it is a fun thing to do.

Ralliart in the states is a CH with a 2.4mivec motor. They just got a cool sticker pack and a nicer name than lancer.

I wouldn’t recommend drilling holes in the airbox, but get a second hand one and play with filling in/ any baffles or extra pipe holes you see on both sides of the air filter. This will reduce turbulence, increase induction noise and hopefully reduce flow restrictions.

You could even try replacing all the intake pipes with silicone/alloy pipes to reduce turbulence and increase noise aswell.

The stock VRX airbox doesnt look too restricting as the intake gets direct air to it but that sort ram intake would be less effective as the filter sits exposed in the engine bay just sucking up all that hot ambient temps from the engine, not ideal but you should get a louder intake noise with the short ram if your into that kinda thing.

Places like Hens performance and RPW sell kits like this for various models or if your feeling adventurous you can make them yourself fairly cheap but this style takes the filter out of the engine bay to help avoid heatsoak. it was fairly common for 4G15 and 4G93 owners because the stock air intake system on those engines loop around the place causing more restrictions.
