Hey everyone,

I am not new here but this is my first time posting, so please go easy.
I am looking for your help with costs, best locations to get items and tricks to get by.
I have a '98 CE lancer 1.5l, to get a roadworthy on, I have the list and will attempt to attach it to the thread.

I am becoming a little more mechanically minded, but I am better if you link instruction threads or videos of things on the list I can do.

Thankyou in advance for your responses.

Mark

That's a pretty extensive list, some of it seems nit picky. Like the wiper inserts for instance.

A few simple things you should be able to easily knock over yourself.
Wiper inserts, get refills from Supercheap of alike.
Number plate lights, put in new globes.
Seat belts, easiest quick fix is to use a lighter to seal the frayed edges.
Rims too big and two worn tyres, find some other wheels n tyres for cheap. Even some stockies.
Windscreen, see if O'briens can do that chip repair thing.
Foglights, secure them. New screws? Sikaflex? Best to look at it to see what needs doing.

Take out the above and you'll have a handful of things left over to keep a mechanic busy for half a day.
Then get passed.

i'm mechanically new myself, but here's what i can talk about:
  • wiper blades: if you've got the user manual, instructions might be in there, including what type of replacement blades you need (based on experience with mazda2). you can probably pick up replacement blades at kmart or big w if you don't have dedicated car places nearby
  • windscreen replacement: my friend had her kia rio windscreen replaced the other week. racv and o'sbriens both quoted ~$400, and her coworker recommended some local guy who ended up doing it for ~$200. all three were able to come to her at the work car park, she didn't need to take it into a shop or anything
  • rims too large: you might be able to pick up a set of stock ce steelies at a wreckers? no idea how much but they'll definitely pass the size check quickly
  • tyres: just get a whole new set once you've got your new rims, so you only need to buy once
"must be presented for second inspection within 7 days": how important is this to you? if i wanted this done in a week, i'd just get my mechanic to do it all. but if i wanted the experience of doing it myself, i'd expect it to take way longer than a week and probably cost a bunch in re-inspections until it was all done right

The front engine mount is quite an easy swap, 3 tough bolts and you should be able to wiggle it out and wiggle a replacement back in. Can also be found as front roll stopper, but id probably go to the wrekcers first and see if they have a nice one around.
Two of the boys from this forum did a video on how to do the swaybar endlinks

I'd get a mechanic to do your rack boots as theyre a pain in the ass to do yourself.

As for the rear muffler, is it standard or after market?

Following the above, if you feel game on the rack boot, here's my DIY from a little while ago: Rack Boot DIY

You will need the trailing arm bushes done at a shop as they are press fitted which you won't be able to do at home.

So I'd recommend getting trailing arm bushes, sway bar links and the muffler done at a shop after doing all the other things. Also get the shop to do a wheel alignment too, that way after you've changed, tyres/wheels ect and if you get the tie rod refitting wrong, you're have no worries as that will be rectified after the wheel alignment.

The exhaust is after market, I have now had another mechanic look at it, they say that there is nothing wrong with the exhaust or engine mounts.
They suggested getting a full kit for the sway bar from supercheap stating it should be around $40.

That's strange that they nit picked so hard then.. Did you anger this man? Hahahha

That sounds like a good idea

I feel like someone said something bad to them.
Like, "Pick everything you can, this needs to be as safe as it can be, no matter the cost!"

Holy *poo* lmao, you got picked on big time!!!

The bloke I go to in NSW, if theres like a bulb busted he will replace it free of charge. He passed my chipped windscreen, non retracting seat belt, loose as f**k exhaust (it bangs on the rear control arm), he used to pass my 17" wheels until I got stock 14"

And fog lights? Lol what!!!!

Find another rego inspection place dude, but the major stuff like frayed belts and engine mounts and bushes, they should be fixed.

Handbrake - You can tighten the cable for the handbrake from the inside of the vehicle. You'll to remove the centre console trim, in which you'll expose the inner workings of the handbrake lever. Where the lever connects to the cable there's a nut - tighten this to pull through a threaded tube which the cable is threaded through, in effect tightening the handbrake cable. I think 5-6 clicks to full handbrake is the aim. Best bet - find a quiet inclined road and adjust it there, you're guaranteed you'll do it up enough to hold the car even on a hill that way.
