Only noticed today, both fans ran on for about 20 secs after shut down. when hot. Left til cold and both flash up and still take 20 secs to run down. Have not noticed it before today, any ideas please? Air con seems a bit down as well. Thanks and KR

Hey mate, fan controllers are super common to fail in these cars. Theyre also expensive unfortunately. Mine operates randomly after switching of and often runs flat out even if the car is cold.

I tried replacing it with a second hand one, and on my first extended drive the car overheated. Obviously my second hand unit was no good either. I still use my original one despite the erratic running, because it’s never allowed me to overheat and does cost a few hundred $$.

Hey thanks Mate, appreciate your reply (Missus asked me when I put the turbo on:)). I did email my mechanic and his response its the fan resistor ($456) which sits on the back of the main fan. Its in tomorrow for a test. Could fit it myself, but in my mid 60s, and under cars from 3-50, when the back royally stuffed up, I leave it to others. All-in-all, apart from being front wheel drive, initial hideous Mrs Bishi service costs (got a top mech now) and the ability to chew batteries, touch wood - top little car.

Thanks Mate, just need to get the aircon checked, re-gassed if needed, after 14 plus years its probably due.

I was actually going to make a thread on this at some time. My Lancer's fans will often come on full tilt with just the ignition on for about 10 secs, then go back down for a bit, then back up, or just on and off erratically. They stay on for about 15 secs after I turn it off as well.
They work well when driving though, so maybe best not to fiddle unless need be?

At the end of the day, if the unit is playing up, it should be replaced.

In my experience, if it’s not causing issues, you can just let it be. It may let you down without warning, it may become entirely irritating. GregK1 said his cost around $450, so just be prepared for that kind of cost.

I think if I was driving my car further than 50kms from home at any given time, I’d probably get it sorted.
