For those who are not a big fan of chrome taillights, but stuck with it. You can use bleach to strip down the chrome bits without damaging the plastic nor have to pry the housing out.
I used some bleach I had in my home, don't need any fancy bleach or anything. Mine is homebrand and it was half a bottle as well.
Pour it in through one of the bulb holes, swish it around and wait for it to change to black. Took me about 5 minutes. You might want to do it in a bucket, so you can use it for the next one.
After you're done, rinse it with water and the last important step is to rinse with demineralized water to finish off to prevent water spots.
And I'd recommend to let it air dry as well. The old polycarbonate may not be able to take the heat from hair dryer nor oven and might develop crazed cracks.
Good luck
