Anyone had any experience with these ?

Mine being one of -->THESE<-- eBay cheapy's it turns out(good thing I got it next to nothing  ) I was thinking of upgrading in the near future.
When you consider a regular K&N panel filter is usually around the $100 mark anyway, getting the Apollo for a tad more seems like a no brainer.

Anyone got one, had one, loved it, hate it ?

i have one of those carbon ones ARC, they are great for cost, mines a little different, but pretty much the same deal, the appolo is basically the same thing but costs about $200 from memory
i would go with the carbon one, reasons, 1) fully enclosed so u can pipe it to get 100% fresh air which does wonders for power, 2) very compact compared to the stock box, 3) pretty much same size in filter area as the OEM, but more inline for possible better flow

had mine for about 3 years now no problems at all, still flows great, and makes mad intake noise that isnt too loud because the box softens the noise a bit

I was mainly considering the Apollo as I found a guy selling them at almost half price. $110 delivered.
I'm more keen on the Apollo because once the filters life is done, you just get a replacement, where as the CF ones we have are glued in.
So ours are not really replaceable unless you buy a whole new kit.

So thats where my my motivations are coming from.

$110? Damn... I'm interested in that... is that the full kit, or just the filter and box?

It looks like a full kit to me. Filter, box, snorkel, hose, adaptors, ect.

Lol... Dude's name is commodore-king... LOL!

I'm so tempted... I would get 2 at this price... 1 for the lancer and 1 for the commodore I'll get next year, but nah, commodore will get the growler induction kit... so I might get one... are you?

So is it easy to install? I'm a noob at this stuff... all I've done was change the panel filter in my car to a K&N ripoff one... but this looks better...

Hey you are in Richmond? Sweet... I'm in Cambridge Park, near Penrith :)

You could also check the prices on Amazon, they are cheap for K&N stuff usually (although I think prices went up a bit recently)...

As for your comment RE: the filter element being replaceable in the Apollo, its better than that - washable! Just buy the $20-30 cleaning kit and you can clean and oil it which will make the filter last the life of the car...

Yes, Its a pretty good price, About the same as just getting a normal K&N panel filter.
I LOL'd at his username too.
Install should be a piece of piss, no longer than 10-15mins I reckon...
My current one took me longer to because I had to remove the factory one first and all the bits attached to it.

Oh and Yes, I am at Richmond, not far away

Id have to say im a little worried about mcm's comment about using oiled pods on a MAF system. I paid 160 for my K&N off road racing/ Marine pod filter. I oil and clean it every 20k so all im probably doing is gumming up my MAF which can lead to engine failure ( running to lean and blowing up).. Far out !!

Awesome, next time my wife wants a Mirage, I'm asking u where to find a good one... Lol!

Yeah I have my factory box in there now, so might take some times taking all that stuff out, but its ok, learning exp... will look on here for a DIY or something, but shouldn't be that hard to do... just don't want to mess things up... will see how I go... so are you getting one? I think I will get one next week before the sale ends... got to wait for the funds... has been an expensive month... :)

I'm pretty keen to get one, Like you I've had an expensive month, Rego on the Mrs car paid today... Bills, Bills and more bills. And a few more things coming for the Mirage.
I've also got to put some effort in to clearing out all the MR stuff I have left over that doesnt fit the Mirage, LOL

I'm not sure what MR coupe stuff would fit your sedan, except cup holders.
I'll throw a for sales thread up this weekend, have a look if anything catches you.

As for the filter, I could buy 10 of them now if I really wanted to, but the Mrs would kill me for spending the fence money on car parts
That and I'm a bit of a tight ass. Thanks for the offer any way :)

The other way to look at it, buy it now, If I don't like it, sell it for what I paided for it, LOL!

Thats cool man... no worries.

So true... I think I'll get one on Wednesday and see how I go fitting it on the weekend. For NSW laws, it has to be secured to the chassis right? Got to figure out how to do that...

Now which colour to get.. red or blue..

Based on Ryan's post and a universal CAI using flexi-pipe, I hooked up a very similar set up. It's a budget job using K&N panel filter (about $120) and 70 mm flexi (about $30 for 1m) both from Autobarn. Also had to get a roll of duct tape so that was another $6.

It took a fair bit of mucking around to get it to something I'm happy with. I got rid of the hideous box in the guard, freeing up heaps of space and saving about 2 kg (and ultimately giving much better throttle response). First I tried to connect flexi to filter box directly but that couldn't work and then by cutting off the very end of the first piece of plastic duct where it slots into filter box, leaving about 20 mm of duct and taping on flexi (similar to Ryan's pic). It's a very tight space and the flexi just wouldn't hold properly with duct tape, especially at the bottom, and I couldn't clamp anything since it's an odd shape against the wheel arch and over the wiring to the fuse box. It sucked air well enough with heaps of duct tape but I wasn't happy.

In the end I bought the first piece of duct again which is obviously moulded to fit perfectly from filter box to guard and used as is by duct taping the flexi over the end of duct that used to go into the hideous box in the guard. So far so good - the flexi isn't under any strain and the duct tape is holding sweet. And it sucks like, we'll something that sucks wickedly and is quite neat in the end. It's cable tied behind the bumper in a couple of spots and is pretty solid and doesn't rattle or anything. I think I've finished my budget CAI.

So I got sick of the pod, and realised I was a bit of a wanker. Now I've got a K&N panel filter, it definitely feels better than the pod.
I'm looking at a K&N panel next time I need a new filter, 10 second change over and non of the hassle of a Pod.

But it's good to see some are doing good DYI jobs on the enclosures. I don't see the gain is getting a Pod only to put it in a box. That said we really need some pics of the 4G93 in the CC with a Pod setup.

Plus I've had the unfortunate accident in the past were my engine sucked in water, causing an engine rebuild and the car off the road for a month. Long story short I had a rust treatment done on the car, they forgot to replace part of the standard intake, so the pickup point was much lower than it should have been. Sucking up water like a drinks straw and killing the engine! Around $5k of damage I paid $1500 and insurance covered the rest. All because of a cheap bit of plastic.

OT - years ago I had a Celica, put in a Japaneses Twin Cam 2Lt import (same block) it had twin carbies which had the air intake right on the carbie, no piping just a thin bit of foam and it sounded fantastic!

With so more research I'm not sure about the K&N Panel Filter now, as it could damage the MAF.

FYI I posted this else where earlier.

don't over oil it and you won't have an issue, like anything, common sense needs to prevail.
as for that video, the testing methodology they use isn't something I'd consider scientific, or something to base off, take it as a joke, which is what it pretty much should be taken as.

as for an air filter change improving any performance? I wouldn't bother touching that point of my intake unless I upgraded intake manifold, throttle-body, was running boost, etc. I may run a cold air intake type kit, not expecting gains, but so that my car sounds like a racecar (the point of the cold air intake style being to prevent losses of running an open pod).

I know it wasn't scientific but it is a guide to what you can expect.

It might look cool under the bonnet but unless you are doing more then not worth the time, think I'll just get a Ryco paper one when needed.

Conclusion: pod filters are no good for performance unless they are the last piece in the puzzle. They are the cherry on the cake for when you have upgraded your whole intake system to flow better and faster. Expect loses if all your doing is a pod.

End discussion, lets move on.
