Hey Guys and Dolls,
Just wanted to say hi. Recently bought a lancer. I can see why you guys like them.
The official description is "MITSUBISHI LANCER LS, ES, VR-X Manual CH CS7A 08/2005~09/2007 4 Door Sedan FWD PETROL 2.4 litre, 4G69 I4 16v SOHC MPFI {115kW}".
I'll read some of the threads but the initial thoughts is I'd like to L
- do some maintenance,
- change the exhaust to generate some of the good sounds everyone talks about,
- improve the stereo
- add some driving lights
- pretty up the engine bay and intake set up
- fix the rear window which sometimes goes up and down.

Happy to hear general thoughts or be pointed to threads you think are worth reading.

What is it Ls, Es, or Vrx manual 06, being cs7a I guess sedan?
1/ maintenance is a good thing, start with oil change/filter, gearbox oil, air filter, check cooling system hoses, etc, that should be enough to get you in or out of trouble.
2/ Good well designed exhausts sound great, just don’t go the 3 or 4 inch fart can way.
3/ Factory radio needs improving, either single or double din, whatever you prefer
4/ driving lights easy install, either wreckers or new on ebay
5/ If you don’t have Vrx, get a tower strut brace from one, read posts before you start modifying induction manifold or exhausts, save any mistakes.
6/Rear window has either gone out of adjustment, loose mount bolts or has stripped gear, dirty switch terminal, unless it goes up/down while driving, then you have a short.

Good call Wagonmaster its a ES judging by the badge on the back.
Its going to be my son's first car. He chose it and wants to learn about cars.
  • Done the oil and filter.
  • I leant on the top radiator tank when trying to take off the inlet cover and broke off the plastic neck that connects to the top coolant pipe. Turned out to be a great opportunity to learn how to replace at radiator. Good learning experience for me too.
  • I'll do some research on tower strut braces
  • The behaviour of the rear window is just intermittent. Sometimes it goes down and stays down. Sometimes up and won't go down. I was going to just replace the motor but we'll pull the door panel off as a start.
  • Air con is non functional but the nieces boyfriend is autoelectrian apprentice, has his aircon ticket and says he is happy to help on that.
  • We're in Perth. Any recommendations on good suppliers of exhausts over here? Also I don't understand the reference to the 3-4 inch fart cannon but maybe with some reading I will :)
I'll take some of my more specific questions to the main forum.

Sorry, not in Perth, in Sth East QLD, hopefully someone from WA can get back to you about a good supplier over there.
Your son made a good choice, reactively easy and reliable car to work on, and easy to live with, good supply of parts still available.

Re reference to Fart can. A Straight pipe means that the exhaust system has no noise suppression whatsoever. This can be achieved by "deleting" the mufflers and resonators and replacing the gap with regular exhaust pipe.
A "fart can" refers specifically to the rear muffler where the exhaust ends. Bigger muffler opening = louder exhaust and ricers think louder = cooler. The problem is that huge 4" mufflers make the exhaust sound awful, especially when attached to a stock exhaust system. Having a muffler opening that is too will make your car sound like a lawn mower or like it is ‘farting’ hence the "fart can “

Thanks Wagonmaster for the clarification and support.
We ended up going to Jeff at Carline Exhausts in Malaga for those interested and got the factory muffler replaced with a 2.5 inch pipe into a smaller sports muffler (stainless steel). He initially proposed deleting the muffler but called during the day to say it was too loud in his opinion. We went with his opinion. I was initially skeptical about my son spending $350 on this but i must admit it does sound nice. It would have been nice if we could have replaced it ourselves for the experience but couldn't find that as an option.
