My Car tends to turn off. While i'm driving...

Hello
I have done a quick search and i couldn't find anything related to my issue so here goes.
It started a month or so ago after my parcel shelf and speaker installation and after i had installed my relined roof. On a drive to a mates place my dash refused to go on, which i believe is a common problem among lancers, and i decided to drive on regardless. The real problem started when after driving up a hill, i stopped at the lights and when it came time to hill start i rolled back almost onto an elderly ladies Hyundai as my cars engine had turned off. I hurriedly turned it back on and continued thinking i'd some how stalled it with out knowing it. The problem arose again when again after driving up a hill my car lost all engine and power steering as i was moving, causing some mild panic. The dash at this point decided to turn back on and the car was fine for the rest of the night. I went through all the fuse boxes and located a blown fuse (9 or 10 in the engine bay) and replaced it. Everything seemed back to normal until today when after 'powering' up a steep hill the engine and power steering once again decided to conk out while i was moving. I checked the fuses i changed they are fine.
Any help here would be appreciated.
Matt

If I was you I would be doing the old fashioned thing and taking it to a mechanic or auto elec to check it out.

To me it sounds like an alternator problem, but I am just speculating going off what it sounds like you've said on here. Are you running an amp with your speaker install and are you sure it's hooked up properly? If it's happened after that then it sort of sounds like the system's drawing too much for the battery/alternator setup to handle and therefore canabalising the rest of your electrical system. Also if it's amped where have you earthed it? When alternator's are on the way out/about to go then you notice the electrical system suffering under load like lights dimming, wipers getting slower or the cd player turning off when the bass hits in the music - this happened in an old car we had with just a stock sound system without amps.

So it happens while the engine is under load.
That sounds like something electrical to me.
Is the alternator big enough? Battery terminals connected correctly?

check earth

[Looks at feet, then at the sky] "Yup its still orbiting"

But yes, it sounds like when your car is facing upwards, something isn't connecting properly, I remember when I tried to drive my Suzuki Sierra up a dam bank, the battery slid out of the holder, shorted on heaps of stuff, caught on fire, then turned the engine off. Luckily I could just roll back and drive it into the dam.

Check your terminals and all the connections that you touched when you did your install.

Thanks for all the advice.
To answer your questions:
No there is no amp. I just unclipped the stock speakers and clipped the new speakers in. They were working fine after the incident.
I haven't noticed any effect on any of the other electrical, the first time it happened i had the lights on the whole time and they didn't dim, it just seems to be the dash every now and then.
Haha, very funny Trondabron :D The battery terminals are on tight and the battery is secured, so i don't think ill be needing to drive into a dam anytime soon :p.
So from what i'm reading the main suspect is the alternator, so is this a mechanic or an auto electrician issue?
Thanks
Matt

Alternator wont stop your car, as long as the battery can sustain it.. so probably wont be alternator.

I would think you may have a dodgy earth (which can occur due to accumulation of dirt, oil, grime etc).

Either that or the coil packs might have turned sour and overhead under load and stop firing...causing your stall.

In any event, Auto-elec first, then mechanic after, if still an issue.

Power steering will go out as soon as the engine stops, as will brakes after a few presses of the pedal (just too hard to press without booster assistance). It could be a bunch of things, fuel pump even. Might fail causing lack of fuel pressure to engine. Too many to speculate as others have said take it to a Mechanic/Autoelec.
